Dear Family and Friends,

It's going to snow 3 feet tonight!  YIKES!  April Fools!  I didn't think I'd really get you on that, but given the winter we've had this year, it may not be that far from the truth!

We are all getting past the snow and residents and employees at Sunshine Gardens are doing wonderful.  Our Physical Therapy is thriving and those who participate are seeing excellent results!  Way to take advantage!  A special thanks to Peak Physical Therapy for a successful grand opening and "kick-off" in our facility!

Let us know if you have questions or needs regarding the physical therapy!!!

Speaking of physical therapy, many athletes need physical therapy for joint and muscle injury, just as many of our seniors do.  Now that the winter Olympic games are over, athletes all over the world are participating in physical therapy.

The story below didn't require a physical therapist, but a doctor of a different kind.  I found it fasinating.  ENJOY!

During the 1936 Olympic Games, Stella Walsh, otherwise known as Stanislawa Walasiewicz, a Polish sprinter, was then known internationally as the fastest woman in the world, so when she was beaten by Helen Stephens of the U.S. who simultaneously set a world record, running 100 metres in 11.4 seconds, a Polish journalist protested that Helen Stephens must be a man.

Supporters of Stella Walsh joined in the protest, arguing that no woman could possibly run that fast.

Olympic officials examined Helen Stephens, and found her to indeed be female, proving that a woman could run that fast after all.

44 years later, Stella Walsh, who had been living in the U.S. as an American citizen, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a store in Cleveland.

An autopsy was performed which revealed a much bigger surprise. According to the autopsy results it was actually Stella Walsh, and not Helen Stephens who had been playing the part of a female sprint champion at the Olympics all this time.

Enjoy April!  Enjoy Spring!  Enjoy the friendships at Sunshine Gardens!

Caregiver's Corner                           By: Lou Gans, Sunshine Gardens Resident

Full of vitality and "spunk," this caregiver is lively, conversational, very helpful, and a joy to be around!  Her name is Ashley Greer.  She is a resident of Durango and has been from a very early age.  Her purpose as a youngster was to help her aging grandmother.  Ashley's love for Durango and Colorado is everlasting.

Ashley received her high school education in Edgewood, TX, where her sibling, Cody, lives.

Ashley is not married, but says she is soon to be introduced to her future husband by a mutual friend.  Is that wishful thinking, Ashley?

Her previous employment consists of many jobs including convenience store work, waitress, clerk at a hardware store, dishwasher, and more.  (That wares me out just writing it!)

Ashley's ambition is to eventually start her own business and help her family; that is an admirable trait!

She takes pride in stating that she appeared once on the front page of the local paper.  Exciting?  You bet!  Ashley, your ambitious spirit will someday soon bring you happiness and success!

FEATURED RESIDENTS

Meet Bill Brown.  He is from California and he is very active, alert, pleasant, and outspoken.  When you meet him, you'll find all of this to be true.

Bill is from Fort Bragg, California and migrated to many California towns and cities.  He was, however, born in Berkeley, California and was educated at the University of Berkeley, California in nuclear physics. WOW!  Bill voyaged to Denmark and lived there and worked in nuclear physics for two years.

His dad, Herbert, also very educated, was a banker.  Bill's son Walt lives in Durango and his son Craig lives in California.

Bill loves to sing and does so quite well.  Perhaps you'll pass by the piano and find me singing some tunes!  Won't that be fun?

Other than all of the above, Bill aspires to live peacefully and to enjoy a full life!  We're sure you'll attain it!

Sunshine Gardens welcomes Mr. and Mrs. George and Nixie Hayo.  This new couple is extremely intelligent, interesting, and humorous.  George was born in Los Angeles, CA and Nixie in Great Bend, KS.  They have lived together in many US cities.

George's brother, Phil, lives in CA and Nixie's 2 siblings live in Kansas, Hawaii, and Durango.

The couple has traveled many places including Alaska, the Caribbean, Brazil, and Puerto Rico.

Their warm hearts aspire them to visit with their family and make new friends, plus play Internet poker!  Without question, your wishes shall be fulfilled.  You both are an inspiration to all those you meet here at Sunshine Gardens.  We are all so happy you are here!

A couple drove several miles down a country road, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument, and neither wanted to concede their position.

As they passed a barnyard of mules and pigs, the wife sarcastically asked, "Relatives of your's?"

"Yep," the husband replied, "In-laws."

Five-year-old Becky answered the door when the census taker came by. She told the census taker that her daddy was a doctor and wasn't home because he was performing an appendectomy.
"My," said the census taker, "that sure is a big word for such a little girl. Do you know what it means?"

"Sure do! Fifteen-hundred bucks, and that doesn't even include the anesthesiologist!"

A big congratulations to the Lady Skyhawks for playing in the NCAA DII Women's Basketball National Championship!  Great Finish to a Great Season!!  Sunshine Gardens residents and employees were watching and cheering!  (And umhum, my hubby is the coach!)  So proud of you!!
