Dear Family and Friends,

In like a lion, out like a lamb. . .well we're on track here in Colorado!  March, however, can more appropriately be described in Durango as, in a like a fierce, wildly large, out-of-control lion and hopefully, out like a lamb.  I'll keep it simple when it comes to lamb.  Heck, we'll take a noisy, over-active lamb, as long as it is a lamb, nonetheless.

I trust you are able to infer that we have been POUNDED by snow and more snow!  It has been amazing.  So much snow, that our residents see crystals when they go to sleep.  It is beautiful, though; like diamonds glistening in the sunlight.  We would like those diamonds to grace others for awhile and let us rest.  We don't want to be selfish.  Besides, we have a LOVELY community garden that is calling our residents to come and play!

Regardless of the snow or the yearning for our fingers to get dirty in the soil, things are AWESOME at Sunshine Gardens.  The sun is shining, exercise class is going great, and our meals continue to be AMAZING!  It's easy to forget the animalistic weather when our little haven is thriving!  We truly are blessed!

Caregiver's Corner                           By: Lou Gans, Sunshine Gardens Resident

Only 22 Years Old and married a few years, this youthful, intelligent, pleasant caretaker is extremely helpful to residents.  Her name is Emily Wingla Cody.  She was born in San Louis Obispo and raised in Durango.

Emily loves the outdoors and when the weather permits, she'll spend a good portion of her free time with her two young babies wondering about.  Emily is happily married and the whole family enjoys their hobbies which consist of rodeos and raising bucking bulls.

After attending Durango High School, Emily worked as a meat wrapper and in child care and health care.  Her daddy's work included the railroad plus being a longtime carpenter in and around Durango.  Her ma works for the housing alliance of La Plata County.

Emily claims she met her hubby at McDonalds during lunch breaks and their romance subsequently blossomed.  She states their relationship was "meant to be."

WELCOME BACK TO OUR FORMER ACTIVITY DIRECTOR "HEATHER"
By: Laddie John, Sunshine Gardens Resident

It is good to have her back among us.  The activities have been well attended and there are more people coming.  This could be due to the fact that we have a lot of new people.

On January 22nd, 2010, we had our first Happy Hour.  Drinks and snacks were available.  There were 35 residents in attendance.

Then on January 29th, Heather arranged to have a "Snowball Fight."  This was to go along with the theme of the Snow Down celebration that was taking place in Durango.  The Sunshine Room was decorated with Palm Trees and the residents were given a lea.

For the "Snowball Fight," Heather crumpled up paper into balls and gave each resident three snowballs.  She then went around to each room with a basket and the residents had to toss their snowballs in to it.  If they got all three into the basket, they got a piece of candy.  After she went around the room, the REAL FIGHT STARTED!  The residents began throwing them at each other, including Heather and our Maintenance Manager, Brian.  Everyone got involved.  It was a GREAT time!

After the fight. . .drinks. . .Virgin Pine Culottes, regular Pine Culottes, beer, red and white wine, soft drinks, and snacks.

Again, there were 35 residents in attendance and we sure are glad to have Heather back!!!!
Spring is on its way!  Get outside and enjoy nature.  Sunshine Gardens walking club will begin soon.  Feel free to join us!
