Dear Family and Friends,
So, will the groundhog see his shadow this year? Sunshine Gardens is not playing that game. . .we don't trust the groundhogs. . .they are too quick and furry to really know what is going on. Our residents, on the other hand, will be waiting to see if Brian, our maintenance person, sees his shadow after shoveling our pathways. We will listen for a little yelp followed by long, skinny legs flying through Sunshine Gardens entrance. If this happens, Brian has indeed seen his shadow. If he comes in with his nose red and glasses fogged over, his slower pace will indicate that he did not see his shadow. Hmmm, the anticipation.
Here are some fun facts about February thanks to coolquiz.com:
- Barbara Jo Rubin became the first female jockey to win a horse race on February 22, 1969. She rode Cohesian to victory at Charlestown Racetrack in West Virginia.
- Bert Parks, famous Miss America emcee, was born Bert Jacobson in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1914. He died of lung cancer in February 1992, in La Jolla, California.
- California legislation prohibits netting for swordfish or thresher shark within 75 miles of the mainland from February 1 through August 14.
- Chester A. Arthur dedicated the Washington Monument on February 21, 1885.
- Congress prohibited dueling in the District of Columbia on February 20, 1839.
- During the Middle Ages, the belief that birds chose their mates on St. Valentine's Day led to the idea that boys and girls would do the same. Up through the early 1900s, the Ozark hill people in the eastern United States thought that birds and rabbits started mating on February 14, a day for them which was not only Valentine's Day but Groundhog Day as well.
- Elton John's handwritten lyrics of his televised, funeral tribute to Princess Diana, were sold at auction for $442,500 in February 1998. The money from the revised "Candle in the Wind 1997," also known as "Goodbye England's Rose," went to several of the Princess's charities. The lyrics were modified from his Marilyn Monroe-inspired pop hit song.
- February 18, 1930 marks the first flight by a cow in an airplane. Elm Farm Ollie, while watched by reporters, produced milk that was put into containers and parachuted over St. Louis, Missouri. Can you spell "publicity stunt"?
- February is the mating month for gray whales.
- Fred W. Woolworth opened the world's first five-'n'-dime store on February 22, 1879.

We welcome to our staff a new caregiver whose pleasant disposition and willingness to assist where needed makes her a delight to be here.
Dawn Haisman hails from Riverside, CA, and spent some time in Farmington. Her past experiences in the working field includes such positions as landscaping, bulk mailing, and banking. The beautiful mountains and employment here brought Dawn to Durango.
It's hard to believe, but it's true that Dawn has been married for 29 years and has 7 children who are scattered all over the U.S., yet Dawn has no brothers and sisters.
Her trip to Alaska was an enjoyable and great moment in her life, but more importantly, Dawn aspires to obtain a college education.
We wish you the best of everything, Dawn! We hope you attain that goal. | |

Local Thanks Staff at Sunshine Gardens By: Susan Beck-Brown as was published in the Durango Herald on 1-24-2010
I want to publicly thank the staff at Sunshine Gardens Country Home Extended Care on CO Highway 172, for the competent and loving care they gave my mom, Gladys Beck, during the last few years of her life.
What makes the Country Home so special is that in addition to meeting residents' physical needs, the staff also gives them love and affection. Many times agitated residents are soothed with a hug, holding their hand, or engaging them in conversation.
The staff at the Country Home also are very flexible. My mom usually was up all night. Instead of being irritated that she wouldn't stay in bed, the night staff said they enjoyed talking with her.
I was so impressed as I sat with my mom as she lay dying that several staff members came in on their day off to say good-bye to my mom.
Durango is so very lucky to have such a great facility for eldercare. Thank you Lauren, Tanya and all the staff at the Country Home.
