Dear Family and Friends,
November is here! I would mention that winter is on its way, but we already have been hit with a couple of snow showers! October snow showers bring November what? More snow showers? Oh my goodness!
Thank heavens the snow is so beautiful. There is something quite enchanting about sitting around the fireplace and talking with friends. That is what residents at Sunshine Gardens love to do when the snow flies. It's wonderful!
Speaking of thanks, November is the month that we celebrate Thanksgiving here in the United States. It's the time when we move from the fireplace to the dinner table to acknowledge what we have to be thankful for. When you reflect on the special things and people in your life, don't forget to tell those you care about that you love them. Let them know that you are thankful they are a part of your life. Residents at Sunshine Gardens are so wonderful and our entire staff and administration is so blessed to have them in our lives. We truly are a family and this Thanksgiving, we all can be thankful together!
If you would like to eat Thanksgiving dinner at Sunshine Gardens, please let Linda (our AMAZING administrative assistant) know by November 18th. It will be a wonderful feast!
Happy Thanksgiving to you all! |

Caregiver's Corner By: Resident Lou Gans
Born in Fayetville, North Carolina, this quiet, efficient caregiver eventually moved to a peaceful town not too far from the big city of Los Angeles, California named Lake Elsinore. Her name is Anna Newman. There she resided most of her growing years. Studying counseling and psychology at Elsinore High School, Anna graduated with a 3.75 GPA. Later Anna moved to Pagosa Springs and then to Durango in order to find a substantial job.
Anna has one brother, Roger, and two sisters, Mirainonee and Rachel. They are scattered here and there. Anna's three children (Mikayla-10, Clara-8, and Steven-8 consume whatever time remains in her busy days.
Her aspiration is to become a registered nurse and to enjoy a happy life! Fear not Anna. Between your high school grade point average and your other accomplishments, your ambitions should be fulfilled.

FEATURED RESIDENTS
By: Lou Gans, Sunshine Gardens Resident
Born in San Francisco and living in several parts of California including Orange County and San Diego, Sunshine Garden resident Lester Monell enjoyed the earlier days of his life tremendously.
Between a food catering enterprise, a family owned liquor store, and ownership of a State Farm insurance agency, Lester survived through the years rather comfortably.
Besides the Liquor store, family partnership provided the social pleasure that life demands. Additionally, his attendance at Fullerton State and Long Beach State expanded his mind's functions.
His wife (whom is still alive and they've been married for over 62 years) and son both live in Durango. Lester has a son and two daughters. Leslie lives in Reno and Linda lives in Washington, DC.
Lester has visited Burma, China, and India. Presently, he lives "one day at a time." Many of us do.
Always pleasant and conversational, we enjoy you living here best of all! |
Cowboy Poets Perform at Sunshine Gardens
By: Laddie John, Sunshine Gardens Resident Council President
On Friday, September 2nd, 2009, our Activity Director, Rachel, made arrangements for some Cowboy Poets and singers to perform for 30 residents at Sunshine Gardens. They included Randy Harris, from New Mexico, who sang two songs, while playing his guitar. Next, was Mike Horner, from Texas, who was a poet and story teller. He told a lengthy story about the "Little Big Horn" and also recited a comical poem.
Next to perform was Paul Harris, from Arkansas. He sang 2 songs, both of which he wrote, while playing his guitar. The last performer was Rick Randolph who also sang a couple of songs he had written. Hew was the only one from Colorado. He hailed from Dolores. The driver who brought them to Sunshine Gardens was Dave Troutman.
After the performance the residents were served drinks and donuts.
