Dear Family and Friends,
September, I know what you all are thinking; ahhh the month of Labor Day! It is the only holiday in September and is so special that it is celebrated, the first Monday in September, in Canada, too! Labor Day is a time to unwind, relax, or catch-up on those chores that have been put off for days. . .or months! Labor Day, thank you President Cleveland for making this a federal holiday back in 1894!
WAIT! I work on Labor Day and so do others here at Sunshine Gardens. I begin to think about all of the people out there who have the day off, not fair! I should be tanning on my deck and folding that 6th load of laundry. . .the pity party begins. Then after about a second of weeping, a reality check comes into focus. I am BLESSED to work at Sunshine Gardens and I am having another amazing day at a great place! Who needs Labor Day when EVERYDAY is Labor Day at Sunshine Gardens. In fact, President Cleveland would probably have made it Sunshine Garden's Day if we existed back then! OK, maybe that's a bit of a stretch, but when you enjoy your job and the people around you so much, does Labor Day really matter? In my opinion, no! There will always be opportunities for me to get to that laundry without an official excuse to do so. (Just some urging from my husband who is on his last pair of underwear).
So, Happy Sunshine Garden's Day to you all! Feel free to celebrate it today, tomorrow, or whenever you need that break for happiness and peace of mind. It is always available here and we give it freely! |

OUR BEAUTIFUL "NEW" BACK YARD
By: Laddie John, Sunshine Gardens Resident
Last fall they put up a continuation of the stone wall at the base of the hill. It really added to the view. Now you need to go out and see the new addition to the landscaping of the "Back Yard."
Robert and Brian put in a sprinkler system a week or so ago. Then they leveled the ground, pulled the weeds, put down new top soil, and re-arranged the rocks. The rocks are part of the "French Drain" system so they are necessary.
When they got this all done, they laid new grass sod. It is really nice and adds a lot to the back yard. If you have not seen it, take some time and go look at it.
We should be really proud of our facility now. I know that when I go out the back door, it feels like going out into my back yard that I had at my own home in Bayfield.
We need to keep it clean and nice for all to enjoy! A lot of hard work went into fixing this. Robert and Brian should be complimented for all the time they spent on this. They both work very hard keeping keeping Sunshine Gardens a pleasant place to live. When you see them, compliment them on the good job they do!
I know that many people liked to see the "sheep" in the yard. They have all broken and I've yet to find new ones. I will keep looking.

FEATURED RESIDENTS By: Lou Gans, Sunshine Gardens Resident
Known to other residents as "Betty" this resident, born in Durango, is named officially as Elizabeth A. (Dill) Vandal.
At different times of her life she lived in Denver, Honolulu, and Calimesa, California.
And her military services as a registered nurse included treating wounded soldiers at Omaha, Normandy, and France. Sometimes she would begin working as early as 6 days after landing in the new territory and crossing the Atlantic Ocean twice.
After all of her travels, finished her ventures in Los Angeles and the Hawaiian Islands.
Proudly retired from the military service as a Major, Betty enjoys living here at Sunshine Gardens in our relaxed atmosphere. Her ambition for the future is to stay alive!
Betty, you are not alone with that thought! Count me and many other residents on the same page with you there!
Born in a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts, she lived for 50 years in the same house before moving to Durango. Such is the start of the story of a popular, talkative Sunshine Gardens resident, Elizabeth Southard.
Why Durango? Well, her daughter and her spouse reside here. Her daughter's name is Nancy and she is quite well known as the pleasant pharmacist who prepares prescriptions at North City Market.
Elizabeth had a sister (also Nancy), now deceased, and a brother Thomas, who resides in Florida.
Elizabeth has 2 children, Susan living in Boston and, of course, Nancy. By the way, Nancy loves Bermuda and has been there three times!
Elizabeth is a graduate of Reading High School in Massachusetts. She aspires to live the rest of her life happily and enjoyable with a good heart.
Elizabeth, you are an amazing resident and a champion of "Name that 1940's Tune." Your spirit and vivacious ways spread through all Sunshine Gardens. Thanks for being here!!!
