Dear Family and Friends,

It is the month of Independence Day and true patriotism; happy 4th of July and everyday before and after!  Through all the parallels our country faces, we must remember how truly fortunate we are.  So go celebrate life and goodness.  Time is precious.

Sunshine Gardens residents will tell you just how precious time is.  They have years of experiences and memories vaulted just waiting for you to unlock.  The amazing stories of triumph and tragedy are priceless.  Simply ask a question or two to one of our seniors (or an elderly person close to you) and you will learn lessons and gain wisdom.  In some cases, you may even be inspired.

Also, look forward to next month's Yearly Celebration.  The theme has been chosen and it is . . .drum roll please. . .Country Western!  Be prepared to wear your boots, hat, and blue jeans.  We will kick up our heels (and walkers) and enjoy country-style grub!  The party is planned for August 14th!!!  Start getting ready now!
What's A Happenin' Here?!

June was a busy month for us. Flowers needed planting, bird feeders needed filling and our Fourth of July Lunch needed planning. There is seldom a dull moment here. In June we were lucky enough to celebrate Marilyn Monroe Week, Western Week, Honor fathers and even find some time to taste cheese during the annual Dairy Week.

This summer we are planning a lot of different outings and have scheduled a Lunch Outing every other week in our attempts to Taste Durango. We have already visited several local restaurant including Digs Market, which was delicious, and JBo's Pizza and Rib Company. We also have had several new opportunities for Sunshine Gardens Residents.

Of these opportunities I am pleased to introduce the Music Together Program. The program is run by Connie Cummins, who I know through my drama studio. The program offers young children a chance to experience music and with the help of our residents, Connie has created a Built in Grandparents program for low-income families to participate here at Sunshine Gardens.

I have also been bringing my theatre students in to perform their scenes and monologues in the evening. I started bringing them last month for dinner theatre and this month it evolved into evening performances. It's like watching TV live at Sunshine Gardens.

On Monday mornings we now offer Yoga. We are working on lower back and core strength during this time. Our yoga class is a gentle exercise which accommodates to some of our residents that have less mobility.  This means we now offer exercise 4 times per week!!!

On June 12 we celebrated the culmination of Western Week wearing cowboy hats and eating western themed foods. We also had a Father's Day Barbeque. A special thanks to the loving staff that helped to make a great time for all of our residents! All western events were a little foretaste, to the big Anniversary Party next month!

Don't forget about the cheese tasting party we hosted in honor of National Dairy Week.

All at Sunshine Gardens look forward to July for more fun, games, and entertainment. If you have any ideas, requests, or would like to volunteer (we would love for someone to water the flowers on the weekends) please feel free to call me at any time at 385-4090. Happy Independence Day!!!

Caregiver's Corner                      By: Resident Lou Gans

Sunshine Gardens has a young lady, rarely seen by residents who works from midnight until 8 am.  Among her responsibilities includes delivering the outside world into my living room each day by bringing the newspaper!

Her name is Katie Hartman.  She was born and raised in Colorado Springs and left in 2007 for Durango.  Her goal was to be educated at Fort Lewis College after obtaining a BA degree in psychology and Sociology at Adams State College in Mamosa.  Currently at Fort Lewis College, Katie will obtain a BS Degree in Biology and also a minor in Chemistry.

Her parents have been happily married for 30 years and love living in Colorado Springs.  Katie's older sister is a cop in Springs, too.

Katie's target for the future is becoming a doctor.  She first began as a massage therapist and an additional voyage brought her to Ecuador to work on a farm.  Whatever she aims at she accomplishes.  Katie, you are to be greatly admired.

Your future dreams become realities. We support you, Katie!

FEATURED RESIDENT
By: Lou Gans, Sunshine Gardens Resident

This resident was born during one of Colorado's worst blizzards (in 1913).  Her intellectual acuity and youthfulness are startling.  Her name is Edith Mainwaring.

Edith spent of her life in the Denver area (Auora) before moving to Sunshine Gardens to settle near her son and daughter-in-law who live in Durango.

Edith is a graduate of West High School and in 1932, attended Burrows Business School.  There she learned to operate business machines.  She was employed as a computer operator for the government.  Edith's other children include a boy who resides in Orange Park, Florida, and a daughter named Edith.

Edith was married to John Roberts for 58 years and she says they were a joy.  What's really impressive is that her parents were married for 75 years.  Her dad was in the lumber business and her mother stayed at home.

As a youthful resident, Edith spends moments operating her computer.  Information provided for this newsletter are also computerized!

Edith hopes to spend her future years happy and healthy.  Her decision to become a Sunshine Gardens Resident is a blessing.  The caregivers will help add years to her life.

Hail to Edith Mainwaring a Sunshine Gardens resident
