Dear Family and Friends,
June already! Summer officially begins this month! YES! In my opinion (and most people who live here), Durango in the summer is paradise! It doesn't get better than the bright green mountains, clean air, and excitement of activity! We live in one of the most beautiful places on earth and NO, I am not biased! :-)
There will be some changes taking place this month at Sunshine Gardens West and we are thrilled to announce them. We are expanding and will be adding three additional private rooms in the independent wing and a semi-private suite in assisted living. Also, a full physical therapy will be added to the facility. The therapy room will afford us the opportunity to add a variety of exercise classes, fall and other risk prevention programs, and resident use of the physical therapy We will keep you posted on timelines and progress.
We are also working on details for expansion and physical therapy opportunities at the Sunshine Gardens Country Home. We also will fill you in with details as they come about.
My daughter Kayli Ava is beautiful and is just over 6 weeks old as of June 1st. Thank you to all for your kindness and well-wishes.
Also, a very special congratulations to residents Ginny Graham who welcomed a grandson Charles, Gina Pruett with the addition of grandson Aidan, and Allene Pera with her new grandson Walter. What a blessing for us all. I'll be keeping my eye on those boys. . .Kayli is a cutie!
Have an AMAZING month of June and feel free to check out the progress of the Sunshine Garden's new additions, no pun intended! |

ATTORNEY'S
Courtesy Resident: Gina Pruett
A farmer named Clyde had a car accident. IN court, the trucking company's fancy lawyer was questioning Clyde.
"Didn't you say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine'?" asked the lawyer.
Clyde responded, "Well, I'll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favorite mule, Bessie. . ."
"I didn't ask for any details," the lawyer interrupted. "Just answer the question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine!?"
Clyde said, "Well, I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was driving down the road. . . . "
The lawyer interrupted again and said, "Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the Highway Patrolman on the scene that he was just fine. Now several weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud.
"Please tell him to simply answer the question."
By this time, the Judge was fairly interested in Clyde's answer and said to the lawyer, "I'd like to hear what he has to say about his favorite mule, Bessie."
"Well as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favorite mule, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway when his huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side. I was thrown into one ditch and Bessie was thrown into another. I was hurting real bad and didn't want to move. However, I could hear ole Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans. Shortly after the accident a Highway Patrolman came on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning so he went over to her. After he looked at her, and saw her fatal condition, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes."
Then the Patrolman came across the road, gun still in hand, looked at me and said, "How are you feeling?"
"Now what the hell would you say?" |

Caregiver's Corner By: Resident Lou Gans
Born in Wisconsin and completing her high school education there, this pleasant and helping caregiver wandered to Las Vegas for a short stint and afterward traveled to Utah and finally settled there for a span of 12 years. Her name is Sharon Moyer.
Sharon's last 5 years found her in Colorado in search for a good school of cosmetology for her daughter to attend. Low and behold, they found it in downtown Durango named the 6th Street Salon. Successfully completing her courses, her daughter holds a license in cosmetology.
In high school, Sharon was a candy striper (Whatever that is). Afterward she continued with nursing training, becoming a certified nurse assistant.
She has 4 brothers and 3 sisters, and is happy and single in Durango. She is proud of her one boy and married daughter (don't forget her cute grandson that is her pride and joy)! Sharon is hoping soon to go to medical classes to earn her certificate to become a qualified medical administrator. She also wants to go to Paris one day.
With your endless desires and ambitions, you've made it for sure! Sharon, we admire your endless spunk, don't stop!
This caregiver was born in Globe, AZ, in an area named San Carlos. Early in life, she moved to Durango. Her name is Lisa Shaw.
Majoring in Cellular Molecular Biology at Fort Lewis College, she enjoyed the education she received.
Her parents raised 5 loving children, Troy, Steven, Stephanie, and Tiffany, and of course, Lisa. Some live in Globe and others elsewhere.
Lisa is a single mom raising her 7 year old son, Amadeus.
Because darkness frightens her, working the midnight shift makes it more exciting, so she says. Her roommate Kellie is also a caregiver.
Lisa enjoys playing with her pet cat, Bill in her spare time.
Eventually she aspires to graduate and perhaps attend nursing school. Why not? You're quite ambitious and will succeed. Best of luck, Lisa. We're cheering you on!

FEATURED RESIDENT By: Lou Gans, Sunshine Gardens Resident
If I were a SGW resident who originally resided in the city boasting of it's Space Needle and water front market, both attracting crowds larger than many national cities, I would be hesitant to even depart. But such is the case of our resident Helen Gill, who presently lives with us. But she has good reason wanting to be near her only child, her son, a Durango man.
In Helen's younger years, she visited Europe 3 times, enjoying these trips immensely.
Her calling during World War II was to work for the U.S. government. Born in Seattle and Canada, this was a staging area for military issuing Arctic Equipment and turning them in again when returning to the states.
Helen, we hope you and your son find ample time to socialize. Find additional time to learn more about La Plata County and it's surroundings as I have and it's awesome. I too, originally was a big city boy, but now my heart belongs to Durango!
