The Mission hands out 1,700 coats from Raising Coats campaign
Thank you to everyone who donated to the Raising Coats with Raising Canes campaign. The fifth annual coat drive was a huge success, and many in Lincoln will benefit from your generosity, keeping warm in a winter coat.
“We want to thank everyone who supported our cause and donated a coat to someone in need this winter,” said the Jones’, who own the Lincoln Raising Canes and who run the coat drive. “We have had tremendous success in this coat drive and could not have achieved our results without the support of our community.”
The coats were distributed to Mission shelter residents on November 10, and additional coats were handed out at the PCM Homeless Prevention Center (HPC) on November 14. Crystal (pictured above) received a coat for each of her three children. Natalia, Angel, and 18-month-old Porter may otherwise have gone without this winter. Crystal shops at the HPC weekly to provide for her family on a single income, and most of the time what she receives from the HPC provides half a week’s worth of meals.
Thank you again to everyone who participated in the coat drive. Because of your willing and generous hearts, Crystal’s family, and many other families throughout the Lincoln community, have coats that fit them and will keep them warm this winter.

Mission gives away 1,000 Thanksgiving Turkeys
Stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and of course, turkey. What if you couldn’t afford the annual Thanksgiving staples? It's a reality for thousands of people across Lincoln. With the big day less than a week away, the Mission has been working to give families a happier holiday.
One thousand turkeys and all the sides were donated and handed out by volunteers. "It's a great feeling to be able to provide a family with a meal, especially in times of need," said Elizabeth Alder, a volunteer at the mission.
The food will feed over 5,000 people, but that's only about a quarter of the people that could use it.
"Today we're serving well over 1,000 families, you know, so probably 5,000 people. On the ongoing we're serving close to 20,000 people here at the homeless prevention center so people we weren't able to touch today with turkeys, we'll be able to get them on a waiting list for hams for Christmas," said Will Hays with the People's City Mission.
Not only did recipients get a full Thanksgiving dinner to make, they also each got a quilt.

Put the "thanks" back in Thanksgiving
The People’s City Mission will be serving up hundreds of turkey meals to Lincoln’s homeless on Thanksgiving Day this year. Guests of the People City Mission along with others who attend on Thanksgiving will be seated at tables and waited on by
over 90 volunteers including Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman. The menu includes turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, green bean casserole, dinner rolls, sweet potatoes and assorted pies.
The meal will be served at 11:15am and continue until 1:30pm.
The People’s City Mission believes that everyone deserves a great meal, a place to stay and plenty of hope not only on Thanksgiving but every day. People’s City Mission houses over 90% of Lincoln’s homeless and has served the Lincoln community since 1907.
If you would like to help the People’s City Mission feed the homeless of our community by making a donation, please click here.

Mission, Nebraska celebrate Nurse Practitioner Week
The nurse practitioner organization was recently granted a week celebrating their work in the state of Nebraska. The organization currently has more than 350 registered nurse practitioners who provide medical and psychiatric care to a large portion of the states’ population. The governor signed a proclamation dedicating the week November 13-19 as Nurse Practitioner week.
Kelley Hanau, a nurse practitioner who works with the Mission's free medical clinic, had the opportunity to thank the governor and others involved who made this possible. Nurse practitioners are known for their blended role providing compassionate nursing care, medical diagnosis and disease treatment.
The Mission would like to thank Kelley and all of our nurse practitioners who give of their self and time at the clinic. Your hard work and dedication is invaluable to our guests and to the city of Lincoln.

Meet Angela
Angela Washington works for the Mission as the volunteer coordinator and office manager for the free medical clinic, where she's been for the last year and a half. When she took on her responsibilities at the clinic, she was no stranger to the Mission, however—she started out as a marketing intern and family shelter supervisor. These days, she spends her time recruiting and training clinic volunteers, a new flavor in the context of her work with the Mission.
"I have the opportunity to work with volunteers and patients,” she said. “[It’s] the best of both worlds. I love hearing patients tell me about the wonderful services they received here.”
While Angela works hard to make sure there are enough volunteers available to continue providing those services, there’s always room at the clinic for more.
“There is such a need here in Lincoln, and it’s hard not to want to help everyone that comes through the door,” she said. “But some things are just out of our control. I would love to have more medical providers come out and volunteer.”
According to Angela, those who do give their time to the Mission are giving an incredibly powerful gift.
“The Mission is a place like none other,” she said. This clinic alone is a place where people are given hope for their future. I have witnessed patients break out in tears after their visits just from the relief of knowing what is going on with them health-wise.”
Knowledge is power, and the clinic volunteers give patients the knowledge that helps them get them back on the right track with their health. When such services would normally cost more than patients could possibly afford, the knowledge is precious. Angela hopes her work can continually connect volunteers with patients as the clinic grows.
