PCM Staff: Meet Stacey

The People's City Mission is excited to welcome Stacey Lima to our staff as the new Volunteer Coordinator. Stacey comes to us after several years working in insurance sales, and a long history in direct marketing. Stacey will be in charge of coordinating volunteers for the Peoples City Mission, including for the upcoming Starry Nights Festival and Gala to take place in December.

Stacey was born and raised in Nebraska. She graduated from Lincoln High and is currently taking classes through the College of Saint Mary in Omaha. staceyPicHer passions and past experience volunteering for non-profit organizations like City Impact and through her church has prepared Stacey for the coordinator position with the Mission.

"I am at a point in my life where I didn't want to take just anything that came along," Stacey said. "I wanted to find something that makes a difference in someone else's life. I feel very blessed to be able to do that and do something I enjoy."

Stacey also said the Mission opened her eyes to the need in Lincoln.

"A lot of the time it's hidden from us," she said. "I don't think any of us are, in this day and age and this economy, all that far away from it. Something could happen, and we could all find ourselves in that situation." Stacey hopes to gain more insight into the need in Lincoln and to be able to make an impact through her work at the Mission. Welcome, Stacey!

Raising Cane's Coat Drive

The weather so far this autumn has been beautiful, but the winter weather will be here before we know it. When it does, the homeless will be left without adequate coats to face the harshness of Nebraska’s winters. Raising Cane’s wants to make sure that not one homeless or underprivileged community members is left out in the cold without a warm coat.

That is why Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers is working to raise coats for the People’s City Mission with their 5th Annual “Raising Coats with Raising Cane’s” Coat Drive.

Residents are asked to bring any new or gently used coats to the Raising Cane’s location on the corner of 48th & R Streets from October 1st through November 6th. When coats are donated, they will give a buy one combo meal, get the second combo meal free offer.

Since 2007, local owners Justin & Jennifer Jones have been able to raise over 4,000 new and gently used coats that were donated to the People’s City Mission. With the help of the community, they are hoping to raise over 2,000 coats to give back to those in need this winter.

Starry Nights Festival and Gala Needs Your Help!

Here at the Mission we're gearing up for our new Christmas season event, the Starry Nights Festival and Gala. We've been planning and organizing and practically jumping out of our skins with excitement, and we hope you're looking forward to the event as well.

We need your help! We're still looking for supplies--would you or someone you know consider donating? We need batting, bulbs, empty boxes, wrapping paper, white tree lights in strands of 100, decorations for Santa's photo area, and other Christmas decorations. Donations can be dropped off or sent to the Mission care of Jess Kuhl. Thank you for your help!

You can also help by donating your time. Volunteers are needed for the festival and gala portions of the event, including choirs, ticket-takers, set up and tear down help and inside event workers. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, contact Stacey Lima at the Mission.

Thank you to Lincoln Benefit Life, the 2011 Starry Nights Premier Sponsor!

A big thank you also to those sponsors who have gotten on board as tree sponsors: Home Depot, Lincoln Journal Star, Broadcast House, 10/11, Eakes Office Plus, Design Associates, Raising Canes and WRK.

And thank you to our patron sponsors: Cornhusker Bank, Sandhills Publishing and Cornerstone Printing. Finally, thank you to our transportation sponsor, Two Men and a Truck.

Get Involved: Fright Hunger Food Drive

Our annual Halloween food drive, Fright Hunger, is running now through October 30th. We work with student and youth groups to collect food as part of a month-long competition. Last year the results were incredible: over 600 students participated, collecting more than 27,000 pounds of food. This year, we hope to exceed that amazing amount.

The need in Lincoln continues to increase, and so does the need for food supplies at People’s City Mission. This year we will give out over 1.3 million pounds of food at our Homeless Prevention Center, where we serve over 8,000 Lincoln children. The Fright Hunger Food Drive is one way the community can help raise food to feed those in need.

Good news: you don't need to be a student to help! Anyone can help out with the food drive--ideas include setting up collection points at work or church and then donating to your favorite group or school; encouraging your business to partner with a local group or school to match the total pounds of food collected; or going door to door yourself and bringing the food you collect to the Mission. Everything helps, and everyONE can help, too!

Lily Pads Clothing Drive

Lily Pads is a brand new clothing boutique and consignment shop located on Old Cheney Road in south Lincoln. The shop carries quality, name-brand children's and maternity clothing at a fraction of the retail price, to help expectant mothers and mothers of young children provide clothing that fits, looks great and doesn't break the bank.

Lily Pads is also giving back to the community through the Mission. You can drop a box of clothing off at the Lily Pads store and request that it be donated directly to the Mission, or you can donate items not accepted for consignment. Donations go to clothe those who otherwise would not be able to afford these items.

Lily Pads opened in September, and is currently open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 7 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. You can learn more at their website.
