Remembering Pete Hardy
The People's City Mission held a memorial service for Pete Hardy on Saturday, September 24th. Pete was killed earlier that week after stepping in front of a knife to protect a friend.
Pete's friend Nick said in an interview with reporters, "He was a great guy. He was always on your side he would do anything for you. Anything you'd ask he'd help you out. He was just my friend. He was here, you asked him for whatever, if he could do it for you he would do it for you."
According to another friend from the Mission, Pete was always around others, enjoying their company and friendship. He had four children, and their mother says he was a good father who loved them very much. He was also planning to be married to his fiance, Cynthia.
At the memorial, friends honored Pete's memory with music, poetry and scriptures. Pete was a good man, who loved others very much.
"Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13

Lincoln Benefit Life–an Allstate Company becomes presenting sponsor of Starry Nights Festival and Gala
We are excited to announce that Lincoln Benefit Life has become the presenting sponsor of the first annual Starry Nights Christmas Tree Festival and Gala, December 1-4. Pastor Tom Barber, Executive Director of the People’s City Mission, commented,
“We are excited about this new event and feel it will be a great blessing to our community. We are so glad to have Lincoln Benefit Life and its employees involved in this first year event. We believe Starry Nights will soon become a Lincoln Christmas tradition.”
Starry Nights is a community event open to the public. Professionally designed Christmas trees will be on display during the festival portion of the event, which will also feature fun activities for children and families. On December 4th, an elegant evening Gala will provide guests the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and heavy hors d'oeuvres as they mingle among the Festival trees, which will be sold in live and silent auctions.
A huge thank you to LBL, from all of us at the People's City Mission!

Don't Miss Fright Hunger Food Drive on KFRX
On the morning of Tuedsay, September 27th, the People's City Mission's own Lisa McClung will be on KFRX to kick off the Fright Hunger food drive. Joining her will be students from Southwest High School and Waverly Middle School (last year's winners) who have participated in the food drive in the past. Tune in after 7:00 am to hear about how you or someone you know can help out!
The annual Halloween food drive is running now through October 30th. Last year, we worked with DECA, FBLA and Student Council groups from Lincoln High, Southwest, Southeast High Schools and Lux middle school to hold a competitive food drive in their schools. The results were unprecedented, over 600 students participated, collecting more than 27,000 pounds of food.
This year, we are asking ALL area high school, middle school and church youth groups to consider participating in the Fright Hunger Food Drive. The need in Lincoln continues to increase, so does the need for food supplies at People’s City Mission. This year we will give out over 1.3 million pounds of food at our Homeless Prevention Center, where we serve over 8,000 Lincoln children. The Fright Hunger Food Drive is one way the community can help raise food to feed those in need.
You can help out with the food drive by donating through your church or school group, or encouraging students to register teams to participate. Teams of up to twenty students can register by clicking the registration link on the Fright Hunger Facebook page. The winning team will win a prize package from KFRX and star in a Time Warner commercial that will air on ESPN, MTV and other channels.

Young Heros: Marc Bothe
The smoke, heat and confusion of a house fire would paralyze most kids with fear. Marc Bothe, however, isn’t like most kids. When a fire broke out in the laundry room at the Mission two weeks ago, Marc helped contain it and urged others to get to safety.
"The fire alarms were going off and I opened the door and saw ashes flying around in the air," said Marc. "I went to the laundry room and saw a fire, and I pushed a garbage can into the laundry room and shut the door and ran down the hall."
Marc learned about fire safety in his Boy Scout troop.
They taught us what a fire needs to have to still run," he said. Because of that experience, Marc knew what to do to cut off the fire's oxygen supply and contain the flames.
His actions helped prevent the fire from spreading and causing further damage to the Mission building.
Aside from Boy Scouts, Marc also likes to spend his time building with Legos. A member of the Lego Engineers, an after-school club at Goodrich Middle School, Marc is working with his classmates and engineering students from the University of Nebraska—Lincoln to build a fork lift (out of legos!) that will be able to lift a car with a person inside.
A big thanks to Marc for his courageous actions!

Kids Without Kitchens
“We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” Franklin Roosevelt
Did you know that children are now the fastest growing homeless population group in the county? According to Lincoln Public Schools there were 535 homeless children in our city last year. Over 100 of them were living on the streets, with friends, or wherever they can find some shelter.
The Peoples City Mission has decided to get more involved with this issue. We recently launched a new outreach called Safe Place in partnership with Lincoln Public Schools and several local churches. This program helps young people, who find themselves in some sort of danger, gain quick access to a safe location and needed resources to resolve their issue.
Read Pastor Tom's latest blog to learn more about the Safe Place program.
