Run 4 the Homeless 2011 Recap

On June 11th the People's City Mission held its third annual Run 4 the Homeless. Haymarket Park bustled with 700 runners and walkers, anxious to begin; even Homer the Haymarket Hound came out to show his support!

At approximately 9:30 Pastor Tom opened with a word of prayer and sent the 5K runners on their way. The group started out in a slow moving cluster, gradually picking up speed as individuals broke off and found their stride. Everyone was in great spirits, cheering as the first few runners passed them, already doubling back to the finish line.

As one by one they finished, runners were greeted by throngs of supporters, applauding, cheering and passing out water to smiling, grateful recipients.

Inside Haymarket Park the "Walk 1 Mile in Their Shoes" kicked off. People of all ages and abilities came together, talking and laughing as they made the three laps around the stadium. Kids skipped alongside their parents, full of energy for the mile ahead.

It was an amazing day full of caring people with one common goal: to raise money for the Mission, and when the final count came in, it did not disappoint. This year's run raised over $28,000, more than doubling last year's donations!

We would like to thank our sponsors KFRX, KX 96.9, Norland International, Planet Earth Water, Lincoln Benefit Life, Lincoln Running Co, Union Bank and KLKN for helping us make this years run such a success. We also want to thank all those that participated and the many that came out to offer their support!

Did you ever hear the story about the two peanuts that stayed out too late? It turned out to be very tragic. One was salted!

Do you think that's a rather dumb joke? You know, so do I. But I still laughed when Wayne told it to me ...

Fund the Clinic

Last year the People's City Mission Medical Clinic had almost 10,000 visits and this year we will see even more; all without cost to the taxpayer because the clinic is run primarily on medical volunteers' time and medical donations. While it's free to those we serve, we are spending $250,000 a year to keep it operating.

We need your help! We are kicking off a major campaign to raise the much needed funds for our medical clinic! Please help us care for our community.

Uninsured shouldn't mean unseen.

In Memory of Wayne Jacobs

People's City Mission remembers Wayne Jacobs, who passed away of a heart attack Thursday, June 9 at the age of 61. Born in Fort Atkinson, WI, Wayne was heading west when his car broke down. With nowhere else to go, he came to the Mission, finding shelter at The HIS Center. Within a few weeks he had moved into The Curtis Center, transitio-

nal housing for men, where he accepted the Lord and decided to follow His lead. After two years in The Curtis Center, Wayne was working for Workforce Development, but something was pulling him back to the place he knew had changed his life. Feeling called by the Lord, he returned to the People's City Mission and began working as an On-call Supervisor.

Harold Valliere used to drive the Mission's van, carrying guests wherever they needed to go. Wayne was often one of the guests driven by Harold, and upon returning to the Mission, the two became close friends. Every Thursday they would meet for coffee, their conversations always turning to the Lord and how he was working in their lives. Harold recalls, "Wayne said the Mission was the best thing that ever happened to him. He came, thinking, this is there the Lord wants me to be."

Wayne was a man with a heart for God and a love for the place that had helped him find his Heavenly Father. He cared deeply for the men he worked with, having once been in their shoes, facing the same struggles and searching to know God's plan. Harold's words are no doubt felt by many: "a lot of the guys here are really gonna miss him, they really liked Wayne"

People's City Mission held a memorial service for Wayne Monday, June 13. A redbud tree was planted in The Curtis Center's courtyard in his memory.

Yesterday was Father's Day. As we remember dads, take a moment to read the story of one boy who found unfailing love in his Heavenly Father.
