Meet the Guests of PCM

All of us know that life is full of unexpected circumstances and trials that we must face and ultimately rise above in order to survive. Recently a young woman and her two children came to find a safe place to stay in our Family Shelter. They've been through some very difficult times but are working hard to get back on their feet.

Several weeks ago the mother who is in her 30's and 19 weeks pregnant at the time awoke feeling awful. She had a great deal of pain and achiness in her arms, back and chest that had become overwhelming. One of our Family Shelter Supervisors went in to check on her and her children to see what she could do for them. After seeing our guest she went to get another staff whom she knew to have prior medical training.

This staff was able to quickly evaluate the situation and determine that this young mother was experiencing a cardiac emergency. Within minutes the paramedics had arrived and taken her to the ER. We soon learned that this young woman was indeed experiencing a heart attack but due to the quick work of our staff she was able to get help in time and her life and even the life of her unborn child were both saved!

This morning I spoke with this new friend and she told me that she just had an ultrasound and found out that her unborn baby is a perfectly healthy baby boy. Wow, what an amazing miracle!

If you happen to think about this story during your day would you consider lifting up a small prayer for this guest and for all the guests and staff here at the mission struggling to help each other through life's ups and downs? We strive to care for all of our guests to the very best of our ability, but even at our best we're insufficient without the Lord's help.

Meet the Staff of PCM: Wayne Jacobs

Wayne JacobsToday I have a rather unique testimony to share with you. The People's City Mission has fairly rigid policies that restrict the hiring of former guests, however today I'd like to tell one man's story that I found to be particularly inspiring.

Wayne Jacobs' life had hit bottom, he decided to leave his home in Wisconsin and drive to Cheyenne, WY to try to start his life over. His hopelessness was overwhelming and resulted in two attempts at taking his own life along the way. Soon he found himself in Lincoln, NE, staying in the men's shelter at the People's City Mission.

Wayne stayed at PCM and battled through his depression with the help and support of the shelter staff. He then learned that we would soon be opening our Curtis Center, so he enrolled in the program, moved into his own room and joined the work program. During his stay in the Curtis Center, Wayne reconnected with Jesus Christ but this time as his personal savior. Wayne was able to achieve sobriety from over 25 years of drug and alcohol abuse. His life was now in the process of dramatic transformation.

In January of 2010 Wayne graduated from the Curtis Center Transitional Housing program, moved out on his own and found gainful employment in the community. Several months later he came back to PCM with a strong desire to give back to the mission. He was soon hired as an on-call supervisor in our Men's Shelter and has served the mission whole heartedly ever since.

Wayne said he knows he was lead to the People's City Mission to save his life and to serve God. "If you serve God, He's gonna take care of you."

Wayne also asked that I mention a special thank you to those of you who support PCM. It's because of your support that he, and many more like him, is here today, alive and well... Thank You!

Thanks to Max Tan for Supporting us this February

We could not do what we do without the support of the our donors throughout the area, but the businesses of Lincoln go above and beyond to help as well.

During the month of February the great people at Max Tan - Ed, Michelle, and Laura and their staff - have supported us. Every Thursday the proceeds from the $2 tans went to support the work here at the Mission.

Their support and your support of the work we do here encourages us to continue loving the least of these. Thank you!.
