Today I have a rather unique testimony to share with you. The People's City Mission has fairly rigid policies that restrict the hiring of former guests, however today I'd like to tell one man's story that I found to be particularly inspiring.
Wayne Jacobs' life had hit bottom, he decided to leave his home in Wisconsin and drive to Cheyenne, WY to try to start his life over. His hopelessness was overwhelming and resulted in two attempts at taking his own life along the way. Soon he found himself in Lincoln, NE, staying in the men's shelter at the People's City Mission.
Wayne stayed at PCM and battled through his depression with the help and support of the shelter staff. He then learned that we would soon be opening our Curtis Center, so he enrolled in the program, moved into his own room and joined the work program. During his stay in the Curtis Center, Wayne reconnected with Jesus Christ but this time as his personal savior. Wayne was able to achieve sobriety from over 25 years of drug and alcohol abuse. His life was now in the process of dramatic transformation.
In January of 2010 Wayne graduated from the Curtis Center Transitional Housing program, moved out on his own and found gainful employment in the community. Several months later he came back to PCM with a strong desire to give back to the mission. He was soon hired as an on-call supervisor in our Men's Shelter and has served the mission whole heartedly ever since.
Wayne said he knows he was lead to the People's City Mission to save his life and to serve God. "If you serve God, He's gonna take care of you."
Wayne also asked that I mention a special thank you to those of you who support PCM. It's because of your support that he, and many more like him, is here today, alive and well... Thank You!
