Wyatt's Birthday Gift

WyattsGiftI learned about the story of Wyatt Bearinger just a couple weeks ago and even though his story took place in December, I thought it was too good not to tell.

Wyatt is a 7 year old from Lincoln who gave his birthday to the kids at the Mission. For his birthday in November, Wyatt asked his friends to bring money instead of presents, so that he could buy Christmas presents for the children here at the Mission.

I talked to Wyatt's mom Stacey last week to find more about this selfless little guy. His mom said she had suggested that Wyatt give his birthday to someone else when he turned 6, but he wasn't ready for that yet. When his 7th birthday came around though, it was his idea to give up his birthday presents and instead give it to the kids at the Mission.

Wyatt took the money that his friends brought him for his birthday and went shopping. He picked out books for the older kids, building blocks for the younger kids, dolls and dump trucks. His mom said he went down the aisles saying, "I think they'd like this, and I think they'd like that." She worried that he might want to keep the presents that he picked out, but that never entered his head. He eagerly brought them to the Mission.

I was really impressed by this 7 year old's story and wanted to make sure that we were able to say thank you for what he did for the kids here at the Mission. I also want to make sure I say thank you to the Bearingers for the great job they're doing raising part of America's next generation.

PCM Visits Get Rec'd at UNL

Congratulations to Meghan Korth and Ryan Sandoz for being the winners of gift cards to Walmart from our contest at Get Rec'd on UNL's Campus on January 20 & 21.

Get Rec'd is hosted by the Rec Department at UNL. They invite area businesses and groups to set up booths in part of the Rec Center so that students can learn about their community. People's City Mission was one of the main charities at the event.

Cans of Food from Get Rec'dThe UNL Bookstore had a booth set up for students to play a game to win a can of food. They could take that can of food to the Rec Center booth and trade it in for a t-shirt. When the event was done the Rec Center donated those cans of food to us. The Rec Center donated over 2,000 pounds of food to us through that event.

Our booth was set up between the bookstore and the Rec Center's. Students could learn about what we do at the Mission, find out about volunteer opportunities, discover the Amazing Grace Food & Clothing Drive, and enter to win gift cards from Walmart on our Facebook page.

We had a great time meeting the students! Thank you UNL for supporting PCM!
