Christmas at the Mission

Merry ChristmasI am sitting down to write this with candy cane in hand and Christmas carols playing in the background. This is my first Christmas working here at the Mission, and I have been extremely impressed by the generosity of our community.

You have all been so generous with donations to the Mission to keep the heat on and to bless the guests with a wonderful Christmas this season. You have brought your children to volunteer to help decorate the lobby and arrange the Christmas store in the Mission Chapel so our guests are able to "shop" for presents for their family.

I heard the gratitude in guests' voices as they picked out gifts for their children and grandchildren, and I saw the tears in their eyes as they realize they will have Christmas this season.

Distribution Christmas 2010You also helped to make Christmas possible for over 1000 families who came to the Distribution Center to pick up a turkey and other items for their Christmas dinner and presents to put under their trees.

This allows families to put the money they would have spent on their meal into their heating, electricity, or rent to be able to stay in their homes instead of at the Mission this Christmas.

Thank you for loving your neighbor as yourself and making this holiday season one to be remembered by thousands of people including me.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Give the Gift of Roof Over Their Heads

We have been distributing gifts and meals all December long, but we can always use your support to give our guests the daily gift of a roof over their heads
and a warm bed at night. Please help us to keep the Mission running by donating online here.

Homeless Memorial Service

Homeless Memorial 2010Tomorrow night will be the official first day of winter and the evening that is set aside around the country to remember the homeless men and women who have passed away throughout the year.

Please join us tomorrow night at 7pm in front of the Mission Medical Clinic to remember those who have passed away. Join us after for refreshment in the Medical Clinic.

Farewell Kyle Winchell

This last week was a sad one for the People's City Mission as we bid farewell to one of our cherished staff members.  Kyle Winchell has been with our Family Shelter for nearly four years now, serving in a variety of positions. Shortly after he came to PCM he became the EDEFY Director for approx 6 months until he decided to return to college. He then transitioned into the role of full-time Family Shelter Supervisor where he has worked for the past several years.

Kyle told me one thing he has valued about his time here at PCM is learning how to serve and be Christ-like.  He said that what has meant the most to him has been the opportunity for God to use him and to see lives changed through it.

When I spoke to Renita Robinson his Director she said, "Kyle will be sorely missed!" Renita said "Kyle's wisdom, commitment and responsibility leave big shoes to be filled." Having personally worked alongside Kyle for nearly a year in the family shelter, I can verify that he truly has been a blessing, not only to our guests, but to our staff as well.

Kyle is moving on to the next stage in his life and while we are all deeply saddened to see him go, we wish him every blessing in his endeavors.
