Fright Hunger 2010

The Fright Hunger Food Drive is an opportunity for Lincoln area teenagers to help People's City Mission feed over 300 homeless men, women and children a day, as well as hundreds more within our community. Currently we are facing a 10 ton shortage of food supplies for the year.

Register your team of 20 or less here and start collecting food. Prizes will be awarded to the team and school with the most food donated overall at the Fright Hunger Bash at the Lancaster Event Center on Halloween night!

For more information about Fright Hunger Food Drive check out the event page on Facebook here, and "like" us to get updates about People's City Mission and events we're hosting.

Curtis Center Serves our
Nation's Veterans

A little over two years ago PCM opened the Curtis Center, a two year, transitional living program for men. At that time we were among only 2-3 other places in the nation that had a Veteran's Program and we were able to take in 12 homeless vets from our area. This year we are proud to say that we are able to expand our Vet's Program to create 18 new openings.

Many vets come home with significant obstacles such as PTSD, injuries and other war related issues that can make it difficult, if not nearly impossible to resume life as it was before. Our staff works with each Vet individually to determine what obstacles they are facing and then to address each one of these issues, so that they can recover their lives again.

This task involves collaborating with other area agencies to meet each mans need in the best way possible. Often the first step is to begin to learn effective coping mechanisms. Then we help them improve their own self-image so that they can develop the confidence to re-enter the workforce and prevent the most dangerous pitfall of isolation.

While in our program we work on developing four key areas in each man's life: mental/emotional skills, financial responsibility, vocational training, and housing.  Each man is mentored by our staff as we are there to help them and share the love of Christ with them as they progress through their journey. Even after they complete the program, our staff provides six months of aftercare to go out and check on how they're progressing. We consider it an honor to serve those who have offered their lives to serve us and provide freedom for others.

Meet Joey & Seanna

Rarely do our guests feel comfortable sharing their stories with others but today we'd like you to meet Joey and Seanna. This summer their family went through a series of very difficult circumstances, Mom and kids ended up here in our family shelter.

You may have read in our November letter about the joy and hope we see in our kids despite their situations, Joey and Seanna are another great example of that joy. When asked about how they like living here they told me all about how much they liked playing in the playground. Seanna told me she really likes the beds here. They told me that when they have homework they get to go to Homework Club and the teachers help them. They eagerly spoke of going to Club EDEFY, learning the Bible stories and playing games with the other kids.

As the children danced and vied to tell me their stories, I could see a tear roll down their mom's cheek.

Life is hard; being homeless is devastating, but here at the People's City Mission there is a safe place to sleep and a glimpse of hope. There is no magic cure for life's difficulties, but there is Jesus Christ and His hope is alive here at PCM. Thank you for helping us to be there for those whom life has trampled on. Thank you for giving us the means to show the love of Christ to those who need it most.
