Mission Bean Effie Award

Last month the People's City Mission was informed that our very own Mission Bean Coffee was in the national spotlight. Upon the creation of Mission Bean Coffee, Bailey Lauerman generously offered to do our marketing pro bono. However, they never compromised their work or offered us anything less than their very best. This dedication to excellence was honored when the marketing campaign that they created for our Mission Bean Coffee not only gained them national recognition but won Gold at the Effie Awards!

What are the Effie Awards? The Effie Awards were founded in 1968 by the American Marketing Association to recognize, educate and encourage the most effective advertsing efforts in the United States each year.

Rich Claussen of Bailey Lauerman wrote:
"Words cannot begin to describe just how proud we are to have done this work with you, Pastor Tom. The impact it has had on helping to feed those who are hungry is so gratifying to us. We are humbled to serve the greater community with Mission Bean, proud to be your marketing partner and to be your friend."

Bailey Lauerman chose to give selflessly, of their first fruits, to help those in need and they were blessed for it.  Deuteronomy 15:10 says "You shall generously give to [the poor], and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to [the poor], because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all your undertakings."  Wonderful things happen when you give to those in need.

National Award for Domestic Violence Awareness Advocacy

Earlier this month the Director of our Family Shelter, Renita Tyrance, was invited to the 2010 Advocacy Day Conference in Washington D.C. to receive a national award for her work with Domestic Violence at PCM and with NAADVAC. While there, she was able to advocate for increased awareness of domestic violence to members of the Senate, Congress and House of Representatives. "The information we provided was eye opening for many officials."

Quarterly surveys suggest that around 80% of the women and children we serve at our shelter have been impacted by DV, and in many cases their homelessness is a result of related trauma. According to the NNEDV census of one day in Nebraska, 606 victims of DV were served, however on that same day, 232 victims remained unserved due to a lack of resources.

When asked about the most notable part of the conference Renita spoke about the effect that DV has on the children. One in four girls are sexually assaulted by age 24 and one in seven boys are sexually assaulted by age 18. "We can't forget that children are the most vulnerable victims of domestic violence."

When asked what can be done to help educate and increase awareness Renita said, "Keep talking because people listen differently to life stories."

Club E.D.E.F.Y. Summer Program

Our Summer Club E.D.E.F.Y. program is off to a great start! This year we have two missionaries living with us at the Mission: Allie Mitchell & Jen Hershberger. They are heading up the summer program as a ministry to our children living here at the Mission. Allie is a student at Concordia University in Seward and Jen is a student at Wesleyan University.

Each week of the program the kids will be doing projects, playing games, learning and going on field trips. This week they had a lot of fun at the Lincoln Children's Zoo!

Allie says that in this summer program they are striving to fulfill each of the values of Club E.D.E.F.Y.: Encouragement, Discipleship, Evangelism, and Fellowship for Youth. She also says that living at the Mission, among the people they are working with, allows them to get to know the kids and their parents better. It also follows Jesus' example of ministry and helps them be more effective in their purpose.
