Four local colleges and universities are participating to collect much needed food for People's City Mission Home.

Saturday, April 24th, 2010 2-5 pm

You can help with our current food shortfall by volunteering for this event, raising money to buy food, by donating generously when asked by a college student to help fill their bag or by simply praying.

Competitions will be held between clubs/organizations from  UNL, Concordia University and Nebraska Wesleyan University.  Students from Union College are organizing this event and collecting food as well.  One winner will be announced from each campus.  The club/organization collecting the most food from each campus will be recognized at a celebration for all participants at the end of the race (awards and door prizes will be given out at the celebration!)

Food donated will help feed the homeless and needy we serve, as we are faced with a loss of over 10 tons of food donations this year.

Angela WashingtonPeople's City Mission receives "4 Star" rating  for the 5th year in a row!

Charity Navigator awarded us their 4 Star rating again for 2009.  We are in the top 1% of charities in the U.S. for financial efficiency due to 93.2% of donations going directly to meet the needs of our guests.

"This rating from such a renowned organization and the associated assessment of 93.2% financial efficiency and accountability is a true testimony to the dedication and sacrifice of the PCM staff.  As members of the Board of Directors for Operations, we must always keep in mind the ministry of the Mission, and the fact that each staff member could probably be making a great deal more money in the private business sector.  This is a sacrifice that is shared equally by the families of those staff members.  However, the Holy Spirit has touched their hearts and given them a passion for the homeless.  I am humbled to be associated with such a dedicated and selfless group of folks that are willing to wear their love for the Lord and the less-fortunate of His creation on their sleeves.  The outcome of this ranking is truly a testimony to their dedication as stewards of God's resources.  Please join me in congratulations to the staff of People's City Mission on the attainment of this prestigious award."

Angela Washington
Angela joined us in September 2009 as an intern from Union College.  She moved to Nebraska from Michigan to be closer to her grandparents and chose Union College for the learning environment and life skills it offered.

While at the Mission Angela has worked in many different areas. She was such a good fit in our Family Shelter office she was hired as an on-call supervisor. She handles everything from giving out sack lunches, cleaning empty rooms, handing out clothing/bedding/personal care items, to answering phones and filing. And she does it all with a listening ear and encouraging smile!

She also co-coordinated our recent wellness program for guests and staff, and is currently working on our Amazing Grace Food Drive to be held April 24th.

"My favorite event so far has to be the Halloween food drive.  I was the volunteer coordinator and I had some awesome people to work with!  The whole day was so much fun!  I encourage everyone to be a part of it next year.  I'm looking forward to The Amazing Grace Food Drive on April 24th.  As a Christian college student it has been a true blessing to collaborate on creating this event.   Amazing Grace will not only serve the homeless community here in Lincoln NE, but this event will touch the hearts of everyone who participates.  As I finish my senior year of college at the end of this month, my heart goes away full of all the love that I have experienced from the staff at PCM and the residents that stay there.  PCM will always have a place in my heart."

Angela has enjoyed the hands on experience she has received and appreciates the responsibility and trust she has been given. She hopes to someday work with at-risk youth faced with homelessness.

"My take-away from this experience is knowing that when you're working for the good of people it doesn't stop at the end of the day.  We need open doors, open hearts, 24 hours a day."

Thanks for all your hard work, Angela!  You are a blessing!
