H2O for Haiti

The People's City Mission, in conjunction with Hy-Vee, Broadcast House, Time Warner Cable, Two Men and a Truck, and Big Red Self Storage, will team up to bring the earthquake victims in Haiti needed water.

February 3rd through February 9th, at all five Lincoln Hy-Vee locations, you can purchase cases of water and donate them directly into the trucks provided by Two Men and a Truck, parked in the Hy-Vee parking lot.  When each truck is full, the water will be transported and stored at Big Red Self Storage.  After February 9th, national relief organization Convoy of Hope will pick up the water and ship it to Haiti as part of their ongoing humanitarian relief effort.

"We all feel that we are being called to help the people of Haiti and help survivors as much as possible," said People's City Mission's Pastor Tom Barber.  "There are many ways people can help the people of Haiti, but we feel this project, unlike some others, will result in 100% of the donations making it to the end users in Haiti."

You are encouraged to add a case of water to your normal purchases from February 3rd through February 9th while shopping at Lincoln Hy-Vees!

Convoy of Hope
, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, feeds the hungry and provides drinking water to people in need across the US and around the world.  To date, the organization has provided real help to 28 million people in 112 countries and 45 states.  Lauded for its effectiveness and efficiency, Convoy of Hope mobilizes thousands of volunteers each year to deliver food and supplies and to offer hope to the poor and suffering.

"Ever So Faint" A Letter From A Mission  Guest Saved From Suicide

I started my plan the first of November, 2007.  I would die - at my own hand - suicide.  I put a vacuum cleaner hose in the tailpipe of my car and the other end in the car.  I started the engine and sat in the car.  After an hour and ten minutes I was still sitting there - wide awake.  It turns out that my car ran so clean that the exhaust didn't do the job.
Time for plan B.  My bags were packed and I had calculated that I had enough gas money to make it from my hometown to Cheyenne, WY with enough left over for a last meal at McDonald's.  Then I would slit my wrists - game over.  I headed south to I-80 and then west to Cheyenne.
Things were going well until I got just west of Seward, NE. Boom!  Out of the blue I blew a front tire.  I changed the tire & replaced it with the donut.  At this point, even though I was planning to kill myself, I was scared of getting hit by a semi.  Funny how the mind works.  I quickly realized that I was not going to make it to Cheyenne on the donut so I pulled into the next rest area.  I would end it there.
I decided to slit my wrists because it would not involve anybody else.  As the sun came up I finally go the nerve and slit both my wrists numerous times.  Guess what?  It didn't work!  The blood kept clotting.  Talk about hitting the bottom!  I remember swearing & wanting to cry.  Now what was I going to do?  I was sitting in my car looking at what I'd done when a voice, ever so faintly, said one word: "Lincoln".  Then it dawned on me - I was not far from Lincoln and they had a hospital.  I headed back east and took the first Lincoln exit with a hospital sign which led me to Bryan West.  I walked into Emergency, showed them my wrists, and they took over.  The nurse told me I was lucky that I came there because they are the only hospital in town with a psychiatric ward.
Three days later they sent me to the People's City Mission.  It took another month and a near suicide attempt with a train before before my depression and suicidal thoughts ended.  Since then I have had periods of those thoughts but they are less and less.  Someday I pray they will disappear, God willing.
I have graduated from the Curtis Center Program at PCM.  I have been told that I am one of their success stories.  I have my own apartment and I am staying in Lincoln.
I now believe that the "ever so faint voice" was the Holy Spirit.  I believe God saved my life so I could serve Him - in Lincoln.  I owe a deep gratitude to the People's City Mission and all the staff.  They have all helped more than they will ever know.  To each and every one of them - THANK YOU!

scaleGod Provides for Our Fitness Challenge

Phillipians 4:6-19
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus... And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.

At the end of last year, the staff of our Family Shelter announced their desire to host a fitness challenge. We want to challenge our guests to lose weight and get into a fitness routine. Not knowing where the resources would come from or what form the challenge would take, the idea was tabled, but resurfaced periodically from both staff members and guests. Oh but God...He didn't forget and knew exactly what we had need of so, out of the blue we had a company in town call and say they were going out of business.  The company gave us manuals to track everything, suggestions for healthier lifestyles, meals, nutritional supplements, incentive gifts and a host of things that will be perfect for us as we move forward with the challenge.  This may be a little thing, but in the grand scheme of things, it is a big thing and a reminder that God is in the tiny details of our lives and waits to "supply our needs according to His riches in glory."

Latvian Kids Donations from the children of Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church

The Latvian Evangelical
Lutheran Church was established in the early 1950s by a small group of refugees from Latvia, a small country in Eastern Europe. The church originally had about 500 members and included Sunday School and a Latvian School for children promoting language skills and incorporating the Latvian culture in their lives. Today we no longer have a Sunday School or a Latvian language program here in Lincoln, but we have a small group of enthusiastic and talented children. These children of Latvian descent come together once a year for a Christmas program to entertain their parents, grandparents and friends of the Latvian church. This year they were so passionate to help out other children who have been displaced from their homes. We very quickly collected $417 from the people who attended the Christmas program. We are so happy that we could help out the City Mission with this generous contribution. We wish the families in the mission hope for the new year in every aspect of their lives. We especially hope that they will all have the opportunity to begin their lives in a new home.
From all of us at the La
tvian Church.
Sincerely, Mara Zigurs
