"Now the Lord spoke to Joshua, son of Nun, and minister to Moses, saying - Moses is dead. Therefore, arise and cross over the Jordan, you and all your people. Go into the land that I am giving to you. Every place that the sole of your foot touches is land I am giving to Israel, just as I promised Moses." (Joshua 1:1-3)

It was a fog-shrouded morning on July 4, 1952, when a young woman named Florence Chadwick waded into the water off Catalina Island. She planned to swim from Catalina to the California coast, some twenty-five miles. Long-distance swimming was not new to her. She had been the first woman to swim the English Channel in both directions. However, on that day the water was numbing cold. Furthermore, the fog was so thick she could hardly see the boats that were accompanying her. Several times sharks needed to be driven away with rifle fire. She swam more than 15 hours before she finally asked to be taken out of the water. Her trainer tried to encourage her to swim on since they were so close to land. But when Florence looked, all she saw was fog. So she quit. Sadly, she was only several hundred yards from the coast.

Later she said, "I'm not excusing myself, but if I could have seen the land I might have made it." It wasn't the cold, fear or exhaustion that caused Florence Chadwick to fail. It was fog. Two months later, Florence Chadwick walked off the same beach into the same channel and swam the entire distance, setting a new speed record. On that day, there was no fog; she could see the land.

The Israelites wandered in the desert for forty years because they didn't think it was possible to defeat the people inhabiting the land God promised them. Their unbelief was like a fog that caused them to stop right near their goal. In the passage above the Lord gives their children a second chance at it, and they choose to go forward.

Did you know that people are still stopping short of God's plans and purposes for them because they can't see the end game? Let me encourage you not to be one of them! If the Lord gives you something to do, then do it. Even with fog around you. In the end there will be victory so long as you keep at it!

Blessings to you this week,
Pastor Tom Barber

Woman B/WMy name is Barb Smith* and I used to live at People's City Mission.  If you were to meet me today, you would probably have never guessed that at one time I was homeless.  At one point in my life I had a steady, good paying job for 3 years. I had a very nice apartment, two children that never had to go without, and life was good. Until October 9, 2008 came around, and the company that I worked for started laying people off. When I heard of the company laying certain departments off, I never imagined that it would include me. The company that I worked for kept telling me I had nothing to worry about and my job was secure until I got called into the office and they gave me the bad news. I was devastated; driving home that day I was in tears.  I had no savings account, I had no paycheck coming that Friday, and I had bills to pay.  After a couple weeks without a job, I tried negotiating with my landlord to extend my rent date until I could find another job. But eventually, I had to move out because I couldn't afford the rent and things got even worse when my electricity was turned off.

I had an old friend who I knew was also having a rough time and who was living at the mission. I used to visit this friend often and when I told her about what had happened, my friend suggested that I come to live in the mission. When she suggested that I come to live in the mission, I was hesitant.  I knew my children would be upset with me, and I felt that I was disappointing my children, and myself.  But after I thought about it, I buckled down and made a phone call to the mission because it was my last resort.

I ended up moving into the mission at the end of October. The mission was able to offer me not only a place to live but a home. As hesitant as I was before, once I got to the mission the staff was supportive, and gave me the encouragement and resources I needed to get back on my feet.  Once I started meeting with my caseworker, I applied for supportive housing.  Once I applied for housing, I wasn't sure how long it was going to take to receive my voucher. So in the meantime, I did everything possible for this mission to make my stay here worthwhile. The mission was able to give structure to my life. I was able to wake up and not feel sorry for myself, but the mission gave me a fresh start by providing classes for me to take, chores that needed to be done, and I felt important. Three weeks later I received my housing voucher and moved out of the mission.

I now live in an apartment; I am in school again and volunteer regularly at the mission. I feel that my overall experience at the mission was a life lesson for me and the mission helped me turn my bad situation into a positive experience.  I am very thankful for what the mission helped me accomplish, it has now motivated me to complete my goals I have for myself and continues to equip me with the experience I need to help me get a job in the future.

Women's Transitional Housing

LydiaThe PCM Women's Transitional Housing program was established in 2009 to offer support services to women hoping to move forward in life after situations and/or events that left them homeless.  This program offers case management and counseling support to women through weekly check ins and educational opportunities to support them in making strides toward self-sufficiency and independent living.  The program currently supports seven women and can accommodate up to twelve.  Women currently in the program are working on achieving better health, budgeting and money management skills, job supports and increasing self-esteem and interpersonal relationships. PCM hopes to expand the women's transitional program in 2010.  For more information about the program, please contact Kierstin Reed at kreed@peoplescitymission.org.
Thanks so much for your support.  Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers this coming week.

Sincerely,
