"Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen." Matthew 13:8-9

Here is an interesting and mostly unknown fact about Nebraska. When the American West first opened up, many people passed through what was then called the territory of Nebraska, searching for new farmland. As groups of people rode and walked across this area of the country they noticed two things about it. First, the dirt is rich and black (good), but second, there was no water anywhere (not good). As a result, Nebraska was deemed largely to be a wasteland. People went through it on the way to something better. One writer called Nebraska, "The Great America Desert" because people might die traveling through Nebraska for the lack of water. So why is Nebraska today one of the most important farming regions in the country? Writers now call it the breadbasket of America. There is more wheat and corn grown here than in almost any other state. What happened to change the country's perception of Nebraska?

What early settlers of the West failed to realize is under Nebraska's rich soil exists an underground lake; an aquifer that lies under 2/3's the state. It wasn't until someone got the bright idea to dig deeper into the soil for water, that the truth was realized. Nebraska had all the rich black dirt AND water needed to turn a "Great American Desert" into a great American breadbasket.

Sometimes, creating good soil is a matter of digging a little deeper. Jesus talks about us becoming the kind of soil that produces much fruit. Soil that is rich and fertile. But to become that may require we dig deeper into understanding who He is, how much He loves us, and what He wants us to be. Remember, rich black dirt is still just dirt until it soaked with life giving water. Our lives are not worth much either until we encounter the Lord and His waters of life!

Blessings to you this week,
