| Needed: Holiday Gifts for the Men |
 |
Tonight, December 1st, PCM will have twice as many guests sleeping here than last year! And we want to give them a traditional Christmas by providing a few small gifts to those staying with us. We are especially needing help collecting gifts for the men staying at the Mission. Items they've requested include snowboots, gloves, hats, books and more. For more information on how you can help, contact Rebecca Weber at rweber@peoplescitymission.org or 475-1303 x107.
We also need wrapping paper, gift bags, tape, and bows to wrap the gifts. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Greetings!
"At one point during his ministry, Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming. He replied to them, the kingdom of God is not coming in the way you think. It will not happen through events or activities that are observable. Nor will be people be able to say - look, here it is, or there it is. You see the kingdom of God is something that happens within you." Luke 17:20-21 Dallas Willard tells an insightful story about REA (Rural Electrification Administration) extending electrical lines out to his home in rural Missouri. He said, "When those lines came by our farm, a very different sort of living presented itself. Our relationship to some fundamental aspects of work and leisure were being transformed. It was as if we farmers could hear the REA saying: 'Repent, for the kingdom of electricity is at hand. Turn from your kerosene lamps and lanterns, your iceboxes and cellars, your scrub boards and rug beaters. The power is now inside your homes, and it can make your lives better. Just accept it!' Nevertheless, many did not accept it, at least not at first. They were suspicious of electricity, even afraid of it. Some thought it would cost too much. Others just didn't want the hassles that change would bring. The blessings of electricity were right there, waiting for them to enjoy. But many people chose not to take advantage of it. This is similar to what was happening as Jesus dialogued with the Pharisees. They were looking for someone to free them from Roman occupation and give them control over their destiny. They were searching for a better kerosene lamp. However, Jesus offered a different kind of freedom. A freedom that forms from within, and changes who you and I are instead of the world around us. This change from the inside is what Christmas is all about. That moment of the year when we all celebrate the birth of a child who brings with Him the full power of the GEA (God's Electrification Administration). A very merry Christmas to you from all of us at the People's City Mission! |

Thanksgiving at PCM! This past week, PCM provided those who were not able enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving, with a meal prepared with the love of warmth of PCM staff and volunteers. Over 120 volunteers arrived at the shelter on Nov. 26th to help serve the meal, including Governor Dave Heineman and his wife, Sally Ganem. Guests were served at their tables, which were decorated with fall foliage and crafts made by children staying at the shelter. Tables were set up in the Curtis Center (CC) lounge so the CC residents could enjoy their Thanksgiving meal together.
Last year, PCM provided over 4,000 individuals with a Thanksgiving meal from the Distribution Center's food basket giveaway and shelter meal combined. This year, in 2008, approximately 10,000 people enjoyed turkey and the fixings with Operation Blessing and the Thanksgiving Day meal at PCM. |
