Curtis Center Business Project
Curtis Center Door Sign
The Curtis Center men are running their own business, right here at People's City Mission!  PCM purchased a pop machine for the men to manage.  Thus far, the project has raised $796.90. The men have paid $100 on the $950 that the Curtis Center loaned them and have purchased medicine for  guests in the amounts of $80 and $35.  They have also helped pay the rent for another guest who has become ill. The Curtis Center Council voted to help both the family and men's shelter, not just the Curtis Center.  They have plans to expand into more machines throughout the Mission, including a snack machine.

"Whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it."

At the People's City Mission I hear many heartfelt stories of people going through difficult circumstances: broken homes, lost jobs, abuse, addictions. Sometimes it is hard to listen to, especially when children are involved. Yet difficult circumstances are not the worst thing that can happen to a person. In the passage above, Jesus talks of an even greater tragedy - a wasted life.

No one wants to live a wasted life. Yet many people find themselves focused almost entirely on things that, by themselves, do not satisfy. They are absorbed with finding the right job, the right wife or husband, having a family, owning a home, keeping good friends, building up an adequate retirement. But very little is going on in their lives of eternal significance. God calls everyone to different places and stations in life, but everyone is called to do something more than just survive it. Jesus said if we lose our life for greater purposes, we actually save it.

So here's a question for you. What things of real value are you spending your time on? Make sure you are not wasting time on things that don't really matter. Take time to find those greater purposes God is calling you towards. Remember, your life is worth saving!

Steve's Story
Steve Proctor was one of the first guestsSteve Proctor - Curtis Center to stay in the Curtis Center. Originally from Texas, Steve worked in the oil industry for over 30 years and owned a janitorial business. After the death of his son and several other devastating events in his family, Steve turned to alcohol and lost his business. He has been to different missions throughout the country and stayed in People's City Mission's emergency shelter. Steve started on our vocational pathway and has worked very hard on his recovery pathway. He was elected to the Curtis Center Council - a group of 5 men working together to better the center through weekly meetings and voting sessions. Steve was a very hard worker and took great pride in keeping the facility clean. He not only worked for the Mission, but also worked part-time at the U-Stop. When the U-Stop offered him a full-time job, he took it. He has now left the Curtis Center to live on his own. Steve Proctor is transitioning out of homelessness and back into the community. He is truly a Curtis Center success story and People's City Mission is so proud of him.
Holiday Gift Giving
Christmas Gifts
Can you imagine being homeless at Christmas? You're a child and there is no tree, no gifts, no decorations. You're a recovering alcoholic and you have no family. You're a single mother of three and have no support system. Where is your hope?

Here at People's City Mission, we desire that our guests have a memorable Christmas - one where they feel the love and warmth of staff, fellow guests, their local community, and most importantly, the love of Jesus Christ. Help us provide them with a traditional celebration of Christmas by donating gifts!

If you have any questions or would like to participate, please contact Rebecca Weber at 402-475-1303 or rweber@peoplescitymission.org, or visit our website for more information.

You can include an additional donation of a tube of wrapping paper and bows! Volunteers and guests will be wrapping gifts for their children and spouses before Christmas, but we need the supplies! Please drop these off at the shelter at 110 Q Street.

Hunger & Homeless Awards
Todd Vesely, volunteer at People's City Mission, was recently nominated to receive the Hunger & Homeless Recognition Award from the Lancaster County Homeless Coalition.  Todd has consistently volunteered as a men's shelter supervisor 40 hours per week for almost a year.  PCM is very grateful for Todd's dililgence and his heart for the men staying in the emergency shelter and Curtis Center.  Steve Proctor, former resident of the Curtis Center, was also nominated for an award.  Read more of his story in the above article.
