Why is  Sasha Smiling?
Sasha with MB coffee
He's taking a coffee break with a glass of creamy, iced Mission Bean Coffee.

It's easy....make a pot of Mission Bean using the regular amount of coffee but only half the water.  Cool the coffee.  Add one scoop of vanilla ice cream to one 6 ounce cup of coffee.  Blend in the blender or simply stir with a spoon.  Enjoy!

Mission Bean Coffee is now available at all Lincoln Hy-Vee Stores.

Lord, hear our prayers for Charity Snell, a 34 year old single parent, who has terminal cancer and will leave a 14 year old son.

Lord, hear our prayers for Jerry Lee, our Distribution Center van driver, who is hospitalized for a biopsy.

Lord, hear our prayers for our guest Rob who was hospitalized for a severely infected finger.

Thanks be to God for the family that donated a used sewing machine for our guest.

Yesterday, a friend stopped me at church and asked how she could get a food box for a co-worker who had nothing but bread and peanut butter to feed her children.  I   immediately referred her to our Distribution Center.

This summer we are qualifying more working families for assistance as many are struggling to make ends meet.

If you know of someone in need, please refer them to the Distribution Center.

If you have non-perishable food, diapers, used clothing or furniture to donate, please bring it to our Distribution Center at 21st and N Street.

Many need our help.
We need your help.

Monday at the Mission
Monday, July 28, 2008
Greetings!

There is a phrase in the story of the Good Samaritan that I have glossed over all my life ... but which I now find to be perhaps the most significant sentence of the whole parable.  After the good Samaritan stopped to care for the man from Jericho who fell among robbers, he took him to an Inn and paid for his stay there.  Then the next morning he gave the innkeeper more money to insure that the man from Jericho would be well taken care of, saying to the Innkeeper, "Whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return."  Luke 10:35.

The phrase, "when I return"  indicates that the charity which Jesus demands of his disciples is not just what we call "Christian Charity by Checkbook", but rather it requires our personal involvement with those in need by immersing ourselves in their lives.  The generous Samaritan planned to return and see how the beaten traveler was faring.  He had immersed himself in his personal and loving care for the object of his charity.

So it is, here at the Mission.  We invest our time and our Christian love in the lives of our guests.  Since I have been here at the Mission, I have learned first hand that isolation from the homeless makes understanding and resolving their problems impossibly difficult.  I have also learned that personal immersion into the pain and the rehabilitation of others is the demand of Christian Discipleship.

So let me say again, Thank You to all of you who have given of yourselves with your checkbooks ... you volunteers who share in our life here at PCM ... and all of you who stop by and visit as you drop off your donations at the Distribution Center ... and most of all to all of you who remember us in your prayers and who invest yourselves in our common life by giving us the hope that you will return and not leave us physically isolated or spiritually desolate.  For knowing that you care helps us to understand that God cares for us too!

Thank you and ever thank you,
Barbara

Donation from Greens

The Green's Heating and Air Conditioning truck was parked outside our recreation building last week. Green's Truck
Thanks to a wonderful donation of material and labor from Green's, we have new heating and air conditioning units in our recreation building.

We are so thankful for this gift as it will provide a cool recreation area for our children and youth.    Our recreation building is home to a basketball area, library, craft tables and other resources used by Club E.D.E.F.Y.

If you would like to volunteer to help with Club E.D.E.F.Y. or other youth recreation projects, please call Aaron Collins at 475-1303  OR complete the volunteer application available on our web page

And once again, let me express our appreciation to Green's for this amazing donation!  You have truly made a difference in the lives of our youth.

Pastor Tom

The People's City Mission truck came to our home on July 18 and loaded several items of furniture that we were no longer using.  When I stopped at the Distribution Center the next week, our furniture had already been given to Distribution Center clients who needed it.  We feel good about that!  We hope that our small donation will help a family create a comfortable home.

If you have furniture items that you no longer need, please call 475-6892 and leave a message.  Jackie will call you back and arrange a time for our truck to arrive at your house.

Thank you,
