~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Monday at the Mission
| Greetings!
Last week I attended an Alumni Dinner given by my alma mater, Hastings College. During the course of the evening discussions, I realized anew how very fortunate I was to have attended a college where there were so many good mentors among the faculty. Those wise and trusted counselors guided me and in many ways shaped my future destiny. That's what a mentor does. Later in life, I was fortunate to have women role models and older mentors who continued to influence my life and who supported me when I was facing those tormentors whom we all encounter sooner or later in life.
I was drawn to my mentors because they supported me with unconditional love and with enthusiasm that seemed to me to be God-inspired to help me bring out the best in my own being. Their love for me was an enabling love which brought out career possibilities that I once would never have dared to consider, even in my wildest dreams.
It is that enabling love that draws us to our mentors and which gave me a new understanding of what Jesus meant when he said, "When I am lifted up from this world, I will draw all men unto myself." John 12:32. It is Christ who draws us unto Himself and who mentors us ... who guides us ... who shapes our destinies when we surrender our lives to Him!
I like to believe the People's City Mission is like that. I believe that we draw men and women to our programs because we are willing to mentor them and to help bring them to Christ who will "draw them unto Himself" and mentor them and guide them into a new and more fulfilling future!
