Monday at the Mission
Weekly Newsletter of People's City Mission Monday, June 23, 2008 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
| Greetings!
Our home computer crashed last week! Not that I use it much. Mostly I use the one here at work. But I did miss getting my e-mail messages at home. I missed getting photos of our grandchildren and, of course, those pop-ups offering me hundreds of chances to spend money for things I don't have money to spend for!
Most of all, I felt out of touch with my world. I wasn't receiving any notes or messages from friends and family who use my home e-mail account. You've heard so often that it is more blessed to give than it is to receive. Well, I learned that sometimes it is more blessed to receive than to give!
Prayer is like that. Jesus said, when you pray do not be like the Pharisees who heap up empty phrases, thinking that they will be heard for their many words, but rather go into your room and privately listen for the word of God coming to you. Matthew 6:5-9. What you receive in prayer is often more important than what you offer in prayer.
We at People's City Mission are like that too. It's not so important what I write and send to you each week as it is what we in return receive from you ... your prayers ... your support ... your gifts, ... your volunteer time. In truth, we here at the Mission are often more blessed by what we receive than by what we give.
And by the way ... you've probably already guessed that it was cheaper for us to buy a new computer than it was to repair our ten-year-old model which had died of natural causes!
Have a blessed week!

| Distribution Center Needs Non-Perishable Food
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We need your help. Our supply of non-perishable food at the Distribution Center is almost gone. We need canned vegetables (green beans, corn, peas, carrots), canned soup, cereal, canned milk, and tuna or other canned meat. These items will be given ... at no charge ... to Lincoln residents who are struggling to make ends meet.
Please help us by bringing these items to our Distribution Center at 21st and N Streets. |
| Last Call for Golfers
We're going to have a wonderful time...and we want you to join us! Call Rebecca. We have room for you!
| Backyard Mission Experience
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Last week seven middle school youth and three adults from Golden Valley, Minnesota were Backyard Missionaries at the Mission. The group was from Valley Presbyterian Church.
They learned about helping the homeless and working poor and we had an opportunity to broaden our vision by working with these wonderful volunteers!
This is the second of several Backyard Mission groups that will spend time at PCM this summer. If you know of a group that would like to visit and volunteer with us, please call Todd Schmeeckle at 402 475-1303. He can give you all the details and send you our new brochure.

| Please Join Me in Prayer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last Sunday in church we used this Assurance of Pardon as a response to our unison Prayer of Confession. These words touched my heart as I thought of our guests who come to us in deep distress. I would like to share these words with them, and with you.
Do not be afraid. God cherishes us,
God treasures us, beyond all else in creation.
You are graced, you are forgiven, you are healed.
Be at peace and share the good news.
| PCM Summer Interns
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We have three Summer Interns working at
People's City Mission this year: Matt Pickering, Jim Cummings and Jane Huston.
Matt Pickering (pictured) is a Chaplain Intern. He graduated from Lubbock Christian University in May 2006. On August 15 he will graduate from the Clinical Pastoral Education Program at Alegent Health in Omaha. He is a Navy Chaplain Candidate. His goal it to become an active duty Navy Chaplain.
Matt previously worked as a college athletic advisor at Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. He also holds his MS in Athletic Administration.
Matt is currently working in our Family Shelter. He has informal pastoral visits with our guests and works to lay the groundwork for trust. Matt describes our guests as good people who are having hard times and need to identify their next steps in life. Matt has great respect for the loving spirit that Jesus Christ gives to us. It is through this loving spirit that Christ works to change lives.
We welcome Matt to our summer staff. .
