Greetings!

Whenever a guest arrives at the Mission, they receive more than just housing, meals and counseling.  They also receive a Bible. We believe that even if all that we do for our guests fails them, they can still find their way in their time of trouble through the words of Holy Scripture.

One of my favorite stories of that truth is found in the novel Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. Briefly, it is the story of a man who was shipwrecked and was finally cast up on a deserted island.  He built a shelter for himself and was able to survive an earthquake and later a hurricane.  Then one day he became terribly ill.  His situation fill him with fear for he had no one to advise him, no one to nurse him and help him and worst of all ... no one cared whether he lived or died.  Suddenly, the thought of death filled him with an uncontrollable terror.  He said:
"Suddenly it occurred to me that the Brazilians take no medicine except tobacco for all their illnesses.  I remembered that I had a roll of tobacco from one of the chests that I had saved from the wrecked ship.  I wend directly ... sent by heaven no doubt ... for in the chest I found a cure both for body and for soul.  I opened the chest and found the tobacco that I was looking for, and I also found a Bible ... which unto this moment I had found neither leisure nor inclination to look into!  I took up the Bible and began to read.  Having opened the book casually, the first words that occurred to me were these: "Call upon me in the day of trouble and I will deliver thee and thou shalt glorify me!" (Psalm 50:51)  The words were very apt to my case ... they made a great impression upon me and I mused upon them very often.  I left my lamp burning in the cave ... lest I should want anything in the night and went to bed.  But before I laid down, I did what I had never done before in all my life.  I kneeled down and prayed.  I asked God to fulfill the promise of the Psalm, that if i called upon Him in the day of trouble, that He would deliver me!  When I awaked the next morning, I found myself exceedingly refreshed and my spirits lively and cheerful.  When I got up I felt stronger than the day before and my stomach much better."

It seems to me that many of our guests who arrive here at the Mission feel that they are as helpless as was Robinson Crusoe when he was shipwrecked.  And we hope and trust that they will take up the Bibles that we have given them ... and they will read ... and that they will also believe in the words of the Psalmist, "Call upon me in the day of trouble and I will deliver thee and thou shalt glorify me!" and that they will find new strength and direction for their lives.

Have a wonderful week.
Barbara

Mike Heili Mike Heili is a special kind of guy.  He works in the HIS Center with men who are working to put their lives back together (see photo below).  He is well received as there is a directness and honesty about his compassionate manner as he shares the Gospel with the men.

Mike is in charge of our Sunday worship services in the Chapel.  Here again, he is warmly received by the men, women and children who are our guests.  They come to Chapel to hear Mike speak about his experiences with our Lord.

But now Mike feels a new call.  He is about to begin the educational classes required to become a lay pastor.  Those of us who work with Mike and have seen him relate to our guests give him our wholehearted support as he begins this new chapter in his life.   Mike and the Men

Please join the staff of People's City Mission in praying for Mike as he begins his classes.

May the Lord use Mike and his faith to further Christ's kingdom in our world.
