Greetings!

Barb PhotoWhenever I read the story of Jonah in the Bible, my mind confronts me with a theological enigma.

When he ran away from God's call to go and preach repentance to Ninevah and  took a ship headed to Joppa which was in the opposite direction, Jonah realized he was incurring the wrath of God.  So when a great storm arose and the ship was in danger of capsizing, he confessed his sin to his shipmates.

Although they already knew that he was fleeing from the Lord, they still were reluctant to cast Jonah overboard, and so they prayed to the Lord, "Lay not upon us innocent blood."  Jonah 1:14.  Yet Jonah knew that his being thrown into the sea would be the only way to save the ship.

In my mind I am still wondering if Jonah's participation in this event was a heroic act on his part ... a leap of desperation ... which occurred when he knew that he was the cause of his life's floundering.  Or if it was a leap of faith ... which occurred when he realized that whatever happened to him, he knew that his life, even if he was thrown overboard, was in God's Hands.

I often  think of the story of Jonah when we receive new guests here at the Mission.  I wonder if their coming here is a leap of desperation as they seek to begin to change their lives by attending our classes and counseling sessions and acknowledge that they are often the cause of their life's floundering.  Or if coming here is for them a leap of faith reflecting an abiding belief that their lives are in God's hands.

Whatever the case, each decision is a heroic leap and I always look on every new guest with a great degree of admiration, all the while knowing that we will do whatever we can for them while they are under care and in Our Hands.

To which I must add that we thank you for your Leap of Faith in supporting the work of People's City Mission.

In Christ's Service,

Barbara

Lord, hear our prayers for Don French and his family.  Don's wife suffers from severe Migraine headaches and is currently hospitalized.  We pray for healing and for comfort for Don, his wife and their children. Don French is the Mission Director of Special Projects.

Lord, hear our prayers for Denise Childs and her family.  Denise' son Aaron died on May 2.  Denise is a current Mission Guest.  We pray that the comfort of the Holy Spirit will be with Denise and her family as they mourn Aaron's death.

Lord, hear our prayers for Mary Ann, a former Mission Guest whose 22-year old daughter was recently killed in an auto accident near Sterling, Nebraska.  May the God of Love touch Mary Ann's heart with comfort and healing in this difficult time.

Thanks be to God for Phyllis Kingery and for her faith and her commitment to sharing the love of Christ.  Phyllis has touched many lives at the Mission and is a source of inspiration and comfort to us all.

Thanks be to God for those who responded to the call to help with flowers and other donations for the funeral of Aaron Childs.  Christian love is a powerful force that has the power to change the lives of those it touches.  Our highest calling in life is to be an agent of Christ's love in the world.  We thank you for your expressions of love for this mother, devastated by the death of her son.

I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ may give us a spirit of wisdom and revelation as we come to know God, so that, with the eyes of our hearts enlightened, we may know what the hope is to which God has called us, what the riches are of God's glorious inheritance, and what the immeasurable greatness of His power is for those of us who believe.    From Ephesians 1.

Phyllis KingeryPhyllis Kingery has been a Mission Volunteer for four years.  We usually see her serving lunch on Thursdays.

This year, Phyllis was challenged by her church to accept a $100 bill and to invest it along with her time and energy for Christ's service.

After reading our appeal for diapers, Phyllis was moved to help our families at the Mission and at the Distribution Center who needed diapers.  Her efforts produced over $3,000 worth of diaper donations!

There are three different kinds of Mission Bean Coffee ... Regular, Decaffeinated and Dark Roast.  Look for our display at Hy-Vee at 84th and Holdrege.  Mission Bean Coffee is a Nebraska (for profit) Corporation.  After paying all applicable taxes, profits will be donated to People's City Mission.

It takes over $9,000.00 each day in cash donations to keep us running at our current capacity... and that includes the Distribution Center costs.

This month we will develop the land to the north of the Mission, turning it into garden space and walking trails.  Some of our guests will have the opportunity to raise produce to sell at the Farmer's Market this summer.

When you donate your used car to People's City Mission, we have it inspected before we give it to a guest.  If there are problems that affect the safety of the vehicle, we have them repaired.

Non-golfers can participate in the Annual People's City Mission Golf Tournament on June 26th and enjoy the sun and fun!  Contact Rebecca Weber to volunteer to help with the tournament!  [email protected]

Our new web-page will be updated every Thursday afternoon.  There is always something new at the Mission.  Coming soon -- donate to the Mission by credit card, using our secure site.

We have replaced the tile floors in the Family Shelter so that they match the Curtis Center floors.  We have also changed the front entrance to the Mission so that guests and visitors in wheelchairs can more easily enter.  You can see these changes  - and more - at our Open House, Saturday May 17 and Sunday May 18 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
