Greetings!

Recently a friend of mine gave me a book entitled Listening is an Act of Love.  Barb Photo Since reading that book, I have come to realize that one of the most loving things that Jesus ever did in the course of his public ministry was to take time to pause and to listen to those who came to him.

My first Bible, a gift from my Grandmother, was a "red letter edition" where all of the words of Jesus were printed in red ink.  Now I would like to see a Bible where every time Jesus listened to someone the whole passage describing their encounter would be printed in gold ink!   For as Paul Tillich, the famous 20th century theologian once said, "The first duty of Love is to listen."

  • Jesus listened with loving compassion to the woman at the well.  John 4:7-30
  • Jesus listened with loving insight to the rich ruler that came to him under cover of darkness and they talked about all the details of that young man's life on into the night.  John 3:1-21
  • Jesus listened with understanding love to the pleading of a man named Jairus who came to him pleading for him to come and heal his daughter.  Mark:22 ff
  • Jesus listened to the Centurion and 'marveled at him' (Luke 7:9) and then he healed the Centurion's slave.
  • Jesus listened intently to the two men that he met on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:17) before he entered into conversation with them.
And I could go on ... citing passage after passage.  And if you look intently, you will discover over and over again in the pages of the New Testament that Jesus listened as an  act of love, bearing witness to the truth that sometimes listening speaks louder than words .. even red-letter words.

Listening is often our first duty in working with Mission guests.  Part of my day is usually spent sitting side by side with men and women here at the Mission who feel alienated, confused, angry, lonely, overwhelmed or exhausted and who, in truth, simply want someone to listen to them ... not in order to tell them what to do ... but simply to listen to them as an act of love.

I believe that listening in the spirit of Christ's love is one of the most important things that we do at the Mission.

Have a wonderful week!
