Greetings!
Quite frequently Jesus would take his disciples apart from the crowds and go to a quiet place where they could be alone. Usually it was when they needed to regroup and pray after some traumatic event such as the death of John the Baptist when he called his disciples together and said to them, "Come ye apart to a lonely place and rest awhile." Mark 6:31
This is one of the great disciplines of the Lenten Season... to be able to separate ourselves from the rush of the things of this world and find a quiet place where we can meditate upon the things of the Spirit. For many, Lent has become a time of study and meditative introspection and the cultivation of the spiritual life.
Likewise, here at the Mission, many of our guests also need to have a place where they can go and separate themselves from the noise and the rush and the commotion that is part of their daily life. Knowing that, we designed and set apart a room in the new Curtis Center that is called the "Tranquility Room". This is where our men can go and find peace and quiet. It is acoustically set apart from the rest of the building. Books and computers are available for the men to use.
I think this is one of the most important design decisions made in planning the Curtis Center. Hopefully, it will give our men a place where they can discipline themselves to the thoughtful process of the power of God working in their lives.
All of this, of course, makes me ask myself where is that quiet place in my home where I can discipline myself during this Lenten Season to literally "come apart" and rest for awhile and contemplate the things of the Spirit?

Jo Frost, known to all of us as Supernanny, is going to work with a Lincoln family. As part of the television episode, Supernanny will bring one of the children to volunteer in our kitchen!
What an exciting opportunity for all of us here at the Mission. The episode will air in a few months.
I'll provide more information about the show as it becomes available. |

| Thank you to the churches that are saving egg cartons, assorted coffee mugs and grocery bags for us! Please note that we always need grocery bags. Each person who comes to the Distribution Center for food uses two bags. This means we need a lot of bags! Thank you for saving grocery bags for our Distribution Center.
The Distribution Center also needs large size diapers (size 3, 4, 5 and 6) and used furniture. If you have furniture to donate and need our pick-up service, please call 475-6892.
Thank you to the McWilliams Church in Lorton, Nebraska. Members brought us many hand-made flannel baby quilts along with other donations today. We are very grateful for these gifts.
Thank you to all the groups that brought us Valentine's Day treats and gifts. One of our kitchen staff took it upon herself to personally pass out decorated cookies during lunch. Some of our guests had tears in their eyes as they accepted this traditional symbol of love and caring. Please know that you helped may the day special for all of us.
Thank you to Irene Piper for donating 40 dozen fresh eggs.
Thank you to everyone who sent financial donations this month. January and February are lean months for cash donations and our donations do not meet our monthly operating expenses of $200,000+ per month. Thank you for your financial help.
| Thank you Jenny Gegg Photography |
| |
Jenny has photographed various PCM guests and their children over the past six months. Our guests are so very appreciative as they do not have access to professional photographers. Many used Jenny's photos as Christmas gifts for their family members.
Thank you Jenny, for using your skills and talents for the benefit of our guests.
If you have particular skills or talents that you would like to donate, please call Rebecca Weber, our Volunteer Coordinator, at 475-1303. We appreciate the generosity of all of our donors. |
| Please join me in prayer |
|
| Lord, hear our prayers for Tony who has recently become totally disabled due to heart problems and has had to give up working as a truck driver. May he find healing and comfort to help him deal with the changes in his life.
Lord, hear our prayers for Florence as she looks for work. May she find stable employment that will allow her to leave the Mission and be self-sufficient.
Lord, hear our prayers for Thelma as she deals with the death of her husband. Thelma faithfully cared for her husband for 25 years. As she faces widowhood and poverty, may she know that she is not alone and may she feel the loving presence of Jesus Christ as she begins this new chapter of her life.
Lord, hear our prayers for Deaada and her unborn son, Jevin Alexander. We pray that Jevin will not be born until next month, as his due date is March 30. We pray for the safety and health of both Deaada and her son. May Jevin be born healthy and strong and may Deaada have the strength and stability to be an effective parent.

| It's Winter and We're Full |
|
| Our family shelter is full and there are 17 families on the waiting list. It is clear that the demand for shelter exceeds our capacity. We are planning to remodel some of the rooms on the second floor of the family shelter. This will increase the number of beds and rooms available for families.
In the HIS Center (emergency shelter for men), we have had mattresses on the floor every night for several weeks. Todd Schmeeckle, our HIS Center manager, reports that many of the men who usually sleep outside have come in for shelter on the particularly cold nights.
Todd tells me that there is a group of men in our community who intentionally choose to live outside. They take pride in their independence, even though it means living in conditions that most of us would not tolerate. However, when conditions become extreme, these men will come into the shelter for short periods of time to get warm, to shower, perhaps obtain warm clothing and food. We do our best to help these men, even if our contacts with them are intermittent and of short duration.
The services we provide are available to our community because of your help and support. Thank you for all that you do! |
| Looking to the Future |
Medical Clinic on our Campus at 110 Q Street
|
| Many of our 300+ guests have on-going medical needs. Most of our adult guests do not have health insurance. One of the problems we have is that guests frequently ignore medical problems until they are so severe they require a trip to the Emergency Room. Other guests try to use local Emergency Rooms for general medical care.
While there are some free services available at Clinic with a Heart and People's Medical Clinic, they don't come close to meeting our needs....either because of long waiting lists or limited hours of operation.
Our goal for 2008 is to remodel the building we previously used for the HIS Center...just north of our Mission building...converting this space to a free health clinic, staffed by volunteer medical professionals and other volunteers. We believe there is a strong need for these services and that providing this care will be a valuable service to our guests and also to our local Emergency Rooms.
Look for more information on our free medical clinic in Monday at the Mission! If you would like to be a professional or non-professional volunteer in our clinic, please call Beth Vavrina, 475-1303. Beth is in charge of this project.
