| Dr. Martin Luther King Day, January 21, 2008 |
|
|
Greetings!
Today as we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Day, most of us will be thinking of his famous "I have a dream" speech of August 28, 1963...the time of the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.
Even so, let me interrupt your reveries! Allow me to share my favorite Martin Luther King quote with you. It is from an earlier sermon that he preached and later included in Chapter 13 of his book Strength To Love. This is his retelling of the story of the Good Samaritan, with a twist.

The Samaritan possessed the capacity for a dangerous altruism. He risked his life to save a brother. When we ask why the priest and the Levite did not stop to help the wounded man, numerous suggestions come to mind...I imagine that the first question with the priest and the Levite asked was: "If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?" But by the very nature of his concern, the Good Samaritan reversed the question: "If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?"
That brief quote I believe summarizes Rev. Martin Luther King's pivotal and most urgent question in life: "What are you doing for others?" I truly believe that this is also the primary concern we share here at PCM. Our concern consistently is: "What are we doing for others, especially our guests,...and if we don't help them, what will happen to them?"
It is that same altruistic concern that I also see in our donors and for which I thank you on this Martin Luther King Day!

| The Filling Station |
| |
| Every week day, the PCM Staff gathers at 1:00 p.m. for devotions. We call this our "filling station." At 1:30, our guests are invited to join us and together we pray for guidance, lift up needs and thank God for his goodness and mercy.
This simple interaction brings us together as a family. We are part of the family of God. Tomorrow, sometime between 1:00 and 2:00 in the afternoon, take a moment...in silent prayer... to join us for we are all surely joined in faith! |
| Rev. Chuck Bordon |
| Counselor For Our Guests |
| Rev. Bordon's office door opens into the common area in the Curtis Center. But, in truth, his door is open to any guest of the Mission who wants to talk to a counselor. And his library of Christian books is open to any seeker who asks for reading material.
God has placed Chuck in our midst to minister to needs that are so great and hurts that are so deep that they bring our guests to tears as they relate their stories, in private, to Chuck. Now that the men have moved into the "new" HIS Center and into the Curtis Center, more and more of them are moved to make appointments with Chuck and to hear words of forgiveness and acceptance.
We thank God for Rev. Chuck Bordon and for the difference his ministry makes in the lives of our guests and our staff. Please join me this week in praying for Chuck, for the guests that seek his care and for all of our guests who so desperately want to change their lives. |
