Learn to COB and Make "Paper Tiles"

One of the Placemaking activites is a cob bench co-created by Interns from
OUR Ecovillage and passer-bys at the Placemaking Event on Sept 18, 2010.
Cob is a natural building method using clay, straw, and sand.

The area around the bench will be adorned with tiles also made by residents and others participating on Sept 18th.  A literal representation of what Placemaking looks like to Shawnigan residents.

Artist and leader in Activating Our Stories, Ewa is sharing her knowledge of paper-clay, and MoonDance's own M'mhawa Phillips will be on site helping people on Sept 18 to create their contribution to the decoration of this Community Space.
Cowichan Intercultural Society Stories Project

Other help is needed (NOT on Sept 18) to create a roof for this wonderful natural bench, so that Mother Nature doesn't reclaim it too soon : )
If you can lend a hand with this, please contact Lynn at info@matoto.org.

About The STORIES Projects

 Activating Our Stories

CIS has gathered 30 community leaders-artists, facilitators, non-profit service workers, and government representatives from across the Cowichan Region-who are coordinating multiculturalism projects which will inspire community members to participate in civic actions.

These 30 have committed to learning how to incorporate the Arts and Dialogue to create exciting, fun, contemplative, mind-altering projects in 11 of the communities of the Cowichan Region.

We invite you to:

  • Help them to discover the needs of your community
  • Work with them to make change a reality
  • Collaborate to create a home that is strong & safe for all
  • Ask how you can help.

About PLACEMAKING

placemaking

Placemaking is a multi-layered process within which citizens foster active, engaged relationships to the spaces which they inhabit, the landscapes of their lives, and shape those spaces in a way which creates a sense of communal stewardship and lived connection

This is most often accomplished through a creative reclamation of public space: projects which take the form of benches on street corners where neighbours can sit, rest and talk with each other, kiosks on sidewalks where neighbors can post information about local events, needs and resources and street paintings in the public right-of-way that demonstrate to all who pass through that this is a Place: inhabited, known and loved by its residents.

In all instances, these projects are undertaken by local communities who come together to discuss what it is they want in their neighborhood - what elements are lacking in the public sphere and how the community can work together with the resources they have to create their own place.

Placemaking touches upon deeper societal issues and contributes to participatory democracy. As the process of developing a community place proceeds; people develop deeper relationships and more energy to create together because they live together.

Creating a common ground that transcends the differences among people powerfully addresses isolation and creates an environment where people feel like they can do anything they set their collect minds to.

The Art House, a new community space opening in Shawnigan Village (home base for MoonDance Dynamic Arts School) is offering up land to the project.
Initially, the cob bench (see top article) thanks to OUR Ecovillage Interns, as well as the beautiful tiles (with thanks to M'mhawa & Ewa, and all the residents who participate!), with a roof & notice board, and eventually a bike rack and other community features, as needs are identitifed through community dialogue.

We also are dreaming of painting the intersection (corner of Wilmot & Dundas where the festival is) next year.  There's lots of inspiration at www.cityrepair.org.

Information about meetings, work bees, etc will be circulated via this mailing list.
