Canada World Youth
|
|
SPONSOR A MOZAMBICAN YOUTH to attend our GALA!We had the pleasure of meeting these amazing youth at Power of Hope. They would like to come drum & dance with us on Nov 7th.MoonDance is providing them with $5 tickets, with the hope that each ticket will receive a matching $5 from the Community i.e. each youth pays $5; MoonDance pays $5; and some wonderful and generous person pays $5 (= $15/ticket).Please donate at the door if you're attending on Nov 7th, or contact Lynn if you'd like to contribute, but are not attending.
For information about Canada World Youth contact the Project Supervisor: Kim250 816 3377There are 18 youth in total:9 from Mozambique and9 from Canada. They do three months of volunteer work in Canada, and three months in Mozambique.Canada World Youth sends youth from all over the world on cultural exchange. To/from Africa:- South Africa
- Benin
- Ghana
- Kenya
- Mali
- Mozambique
- Tanzania
Many exchange programs are a user-pays system that prevent youth from less prosperous nations from experiencing the learning and peace-building inherent in such programs. It is such a wonderful opportunity for the youth to be here, and for our community to host them! This is a small way of showing our supportImagine coming from a country where you are surrounded by music and dance every day - to Canada! Ouch!! Of course there are so many things here to fall in love with, but these kids need to DANCE!

Precious Garden
"If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change." - Buddha Discover the things
in your life ~ the situations and activities, the people, your own thoughts and feelings ~ that give you a reason for joy, appreciation and gratitude.
Cultivate these
like a precious garden in the midst of poisonous weeds, for then this garden
will grow and give you sustenance.

Lynn

Dance - Celebrate Life!
It is not just a tag-line. Indulge me ~ try this right now:
Cross your arms tightly across your chest, slump your shoulders, and say "I am so joyful".
Now stand up, throw your arms in the air, toss your head back, and say "I am so depressed".
I think you get the picture ; ) Our movements are completely connected to our well-being, and its cyclical: feeling good helps us to move and feel comfortable in our bodies, but the reverse is true, too: moving in positive ways can bring more joy to our lives. Expressing our joy openly, and feeding that joy, is what MoonDance is all about!
I've been reflecting a lot on the past 10 years (SO many amazing people to whom I extend my gratitude), but I want to make particular mention of Erin Brûlé. Partly because she can't attend the Gala on Nov 7th (she now lives in Kamloops) but also that you probably wouldn't be reading this if it wasn't for her. Her energy and inspiration opened a lot of pathways for us at MoonDance. Thanks, Erin.
And huge huge gratitude to the folks that have been with us nearly all of the 10 years (Kim, Erin, Erin, Rosanne, Karen, Sika, and many more!) Your support, dedication, and smiles are what have sustained us all these years!
So, what's next for MoonDance?
* Construction of the Art House at Shawnigan Lake (see below for photos) * Bhangra Dance classes with Raji -- our first major departure from Africa! I'm SO excited!! * Ballet Saamato (Conakry, Guinea) coming to Canada in 2010!
Thank you for your energy and support. Imagine the party we'll have in 2019!!

Bhangra Dance Punjab Celebration Dance!
*ONLY LOCATION IN VICTORIA* Euro Studios, Victoria5:15 - 6:15pmMondaysSee www.MoonDanceArts.ca to register.

Bhangra is a lively form of folk music and dance that originates from
Punjab. Punjabi wheat farmers danced and sang songs about village life
to help pass the time while working in the fields. With time, these
became part of harvest celebrations at Vaisakhi (April 13) festivals,
as the sight of their crops growing invigorated the farmers.
From here
the dance quickly moved through all divisions of class and education,
eventually becoming a part of weddings, New Year parties, and other
important occasions.
It has enjoyed a surge in popularity worldwide, as the music speaks to the spirit, the body responds with
movement... the outcome is a dance to delight all who answer the call.
Lynn has been wanting to add Bhangra to the MoonDance roster for years. She sees it as the Indian parallel to Guinean Dance, in its celebratory, full-bodied movements. This is MoonDance's first major departure from African-based arts!!
Our fabulous instructor:

Born in the Punjab State of India, Raji Basi taught herself to dance
watching bollywood films. Raji's passion are choreographing and dancing
to Punjabi/Hindi songs, which she has performed in many local variety
shows and for television programs. She has also taught dance to
children and adults. Most recently, Raji lead Bhangra workshops at
HealthFest 2009 and Soulsister Dance Studio in Nanaimo BC. MoonDance is so excited to add Raji's energy, talents, and smiles to our awesome offerings of instructors and classes!

 The Practice of Understanding
"If one is master of one thing and understands one thing well, one has at the same time, insight into and understanding of many things."
-Vincent Van Gogh
Understanding is having clear insight into ideas and feelings. We thoughtfully seek to comprehend the full truth. We are mindful are what is truly important. We are deeply present with others with compassion. We put ourselves in another's shoes in order to forgive. We treasure knowledge, and explore what is true and real.
Affirm:
I reflect on the meaning of ideas.
I have empathy for others' feelings.
I am a discerning listener.
I forgive.
I value knowledge and perceptiveness.
I am mindful.
I am thankful for the gift of Understanding: It enlightens my viewpoint.
