Greetings!

Warmer summer temps have brought the best smallmouth fishing of the year! The guides at the shop have been calling in reports of good catches of smallmouth most every day.  Bart landed a 22'  fish and the rest of the crew is reporting fish over 19' regularly.  The trout fishing has turned to terrestrials, tricos and Luekons.   Stop in the shop and let us help you kick off the summer fishing season on a good note.  Stop by  to check local river conditions or click on  Tightlinesflyshop.com to get up to date stream reports.  We look forward to seeing you and are anxious to help with all your fly fishing needs.
Fly of the Month-Murdich Minnow
 Arizona Scud Blend

Murdich Minnow

This fly has been one of the shop's smallmouth guides go to patterns for many seasons.  The Murdich is a great searching fly for huge river smallmouth.   Bart starting fishing this pattern about 7 years ago after watching an angler in front of him catch fish after fish on a floating Rapala.  He came into the shop searching for the largest baitfish flies we had.  The Murdich was originally designed as a striper fly but will go down in history as one of the finest mid-river baitfish patterns created.  Since that time this has proven itself on even the most difficult days on the water.  Enjoy.

Thread:  GSP-White
Hook:  TMC 8089 Size 10
Tail: White Bucktail, Silver and Pearl Flashabou
Collar: White Ice Fur
Head: Pearl Estaz
Eyes: 5.0 Prisma (glued on with zap-a-gel)
Top Color: Cool Gray Prisma Color

Fishing Notes:   Fish this fly around wood, mid-river humps and weed beds.  The great thing about this fly is that is suspends and does not get hung up as easily as a clouser or a muppet.  We fish it on RIO 10lb Bass leaders, trimming them back 2 feet and adding 2 feet of 10lb Chameleon Maxima.   The Maxima Chameleon is the perfect color to match our tanin stained rivers.  Give us a shout if you have any questions and good luck.

Inland Trout Fishing Report July 30th , 2008

Southwest Wisconsin

Arizona Scud Blend Water levels in  the Driftless area are good for this time of year.  Look for fish to be feeding on sporadic  midges, tiny olive mayflies, and the first few tricos of the season.  Terrestrial fishing has also started to pick up with the summer heat.  Ants, beetles, small hoppers, and crickets will take fish along brushy banks.  Also, small droppers below terrestrials will up your odds of hooking fish.  If the trout are not looking up, fish the likely holding water with a double-nymph rig or a brightly colored streamer.

Fly Patterns:

Dark Hare's Ears  12-16

Smallmouth Bass Report July 30th , 2008

The Smallmouth fishing has been very good this month.  Poppers and other surface flies have been very effective.  Large baitfish patterns continue to work well for both bass and pike.  Look for fish to be feeding near shoreline structure and in or around mid-river weed beds and rock piles.  Tim has noticed a large concentration of both Dragon and Damsel flies on the river and has had fantastic success fishing a Whitlock's sparkle Dragon fly on glassy water.  The fish will rise to the Dragon like a cutthroat.  Give it a try!

The shop still has a few openings for guide trips this summer.

Check out our trips at www.tightlinesflyshop.com  or view a video of our smallmouth trips.  Stay with us at the Four Seasons resort the night before your guide trip!  Give the shop a call if you have any questions on tackle or flies.
