Greetings!

The waters of Wisconsin have weathered the storms.  Strong wind and rain have beat up our rivers and streams, but they are bouncing back quickly.  Trout have already started to resume their normal feeding patterns.  The Hex hatch is just getting under way in the central part of the state.  Warm water fishing has been excellent and will continue to improve with more warm weather.  Tight Lines currently has more gear and flies in stock than ever before.  Stop in the shop and let us help you kick off the summer fishing season on a good note.    Stop by  to check local river conditions or click on  Tightlinesflyshop.com to get up to date stream reports.  We look forward to seeing you and are anxious to help with all your fly fishing needs.
Fly of the Month-Extended Body Hex

Arizona Scud Blend

Extended Body Hex

This is a variation of Marty Kwiteks hex pattern.  I have changed the hook and body material to make the fly a bit more durable.

Thread:  Uni 6/0 Brown
Hook:  Gamakatsu Split shot drop shot hook sz. 2
Extended Body: Elk Rump, Moose mane
Wing: Light Carabou
Hackle: Medium brown
(note: I use a thin amount of Daves Flexament to make the extended body more durable.)

Fishing Notes

I like to fish this fly with a 71/2 foot 2x or 3x tapered leader.  The fish are not leader shy at 10:00PM!  Add floatant on the body and wing only.  If you get floatant on the hook it does not sit correctly on the water.  Get to your hex spot early to stake out a good piece of water and wait.  You will see smaller fish rising but resist casting to them.  I like to pick out one or two larger rises and fish to them.

Help Save the Spring Creeks!!!!

This image was taken 08/19/2007 at 9:15am. The Flood as seen from the top of Seas Branch Lake dam. The county landfill is on top of the ridge to the right. Now think back to last summers flooding and how the water flowed down and out of the hillsides.

URGENT: The Seas Branch and West Fork water sheds are being threatened by potential pollution from Dairyland Power Cooperatives' proposed coal ash landfill. This requires swift action. Please check out the following link and then call or write Dairyland Power and your state representatives to complain about this possible environmental disaster.

Click here to contact the Dairyland Genoa Offsite Project. The coal ash landfill.  Be sure and state that you are calling about Dairyland Power's Genoa offsite project.

Inland Trout Fishing Report June 18th, 2008

Southwest Wisconsin

The spring creeks experienced record flooding earlier this month.  From what we have heard in the last few days, most of the damage was done to property owners and not the rivers.  Many of the creeks have receded back to fishable levels already and the fish have been active.  The best bet will be to dredge with large nymphs and dark streamers as the water drops.   The upper ends of the rivers will be the first to completely clear and will be fishing normally for this time of year.  Look for fish to be responsive to beetles, ants, and tan caddis.  Attractor dries will also work well in deep, fast runs.  Click here to view other photos of the flooding that took place on the spring creeks.

This is a photo of the West Fork Camp grounds last week.  WOW-The river is back in its banks and fishing well again.  Click here to check out the West Fork Sportsman Club Web Site

The central part of the state took a fair portion of the rain as of late.  Fortunately, the rivers are dropping.  The Hex hatch has begun and fish have been actively feeding on the big bugs.  Look for some action early in the evening with small emergences of Light Cahills.  As the Hex start to come off, fish will often look to the emergers for an easy meal.  Emerger patterns will take fish early on and will continue to work well throughout the hatch on many nights.  As the hatch progresses, dun patterns will begin to catch fish.  It is also wise to be prepared with some spinner patterns in case there is a spinner fall.  In the heat of the season it is not uncommon to see an emergence and a spinner fall in the same night.  If the hatch does not go off, large streamers and mouse patterns will move some big fish. The Pine, White, Mecan all have great hatches.  Silt bottoms.

Smallmouth Bass Report June  18, 2008

We have had a great start to our smallmouth season.  Lots of top water action early and consitant fishing all spring.  The water levels however have been a bit up and down.  One day the river is running at 2,000 CFS and the next 5,500.  Our guides have adapted to these changes by using heavier flies or working the banks TIGHT with larger popping bugs.  The Bass have been using bank cover this season more than ever.  The last couple of seasons the water levels have been extremely low even in the spring.  The fish would use mid river shelves and drops as ambush spots.  This season our mid river shelves are 6 feet deep, forcing the bass to the banks.  This however is good news.  We should have plenty of water the rest of the summer to float our boats high.   The bass have made it through the spawn and we are starting to catch some of the larger females again.  As the water continues to fall look for the bass to move off the shorlines.  We have also caught numerous northern pike this spring.  With the cooler temps these fish have been extremely active.  It is not a bad idea to bring a few wire leaders and pike flies on your next outing.

The shop still has a few openings for guide trips this summer.

Check out our trips at www.tightlinesflyshop.com  or view a video of our smallmouth trips.  Stay with us at the Four Seasons resort the night before your guide trip!  Give the shop a call if you have any questions on tackle or flies.
