New C.F. Burkheimer Spey Rods at Tight Lines!!

Kerry Burkheimer

Introduction
C.F. Burkheimer Rod Company has been designing and manufacturing graphite fly rods since 1980. Their unique niche in the industry has been working directly with individual customers; engineering and developing specific rod actions for serious anglers from around the world.  They now offer custom rods through a few select shops, such as Tight Lines Fly Fishing Co. in DePere, WI.

At C. F.  Burkheimer rod crafting is an art, there is no mass production runs or sales quotas. Smaller production enhances their ability to control every step of manufacturing. They offer completely hand-crafted fly rods made in the United States... one at a time to insure the highest quality standard in the industry. Through intense research and development, each detail is worked then reworked, to provide the very best in performance, durability, uncompromised craftsmanship, and angler satisfaction.  Kerry and his crew regularly fish because, time on the water gives the greatest insights into rod design and innovation.  They offer many rod designs, each with specific actions according to their application.  Their goals are simple and direct...to design, manufacture, and continually innovate the finest fly rods in the world.

Bart Steelhead

Best fall fishing in years!!!

The alarm clock went off at 4:30 am.  Charlie was meeting me at Tight Lines at 5:15.  We headed to the river with hopes of big fall steelhead, a grab would make today all worth while.  Charlie and I geared up and on the first pass through I hooked and landed about a seven pound brown.  The beauty of the morning was that fish would be the first of 12 for us.  We landed only Browns, but we both knew that Steelhead were swimming those waters.  All that, and we made it back to the shop to open at 10:00.

This fall has been very interesting.  The guys in the shop have hooked and landed more huge Browns and Steelhead than in ever before.  The lake side tributaries have fish in them, but have very low water.  The bay side tributaries are also low,  but the fish just don't seem to mind.  The fantastic part of fishing in the fall and winter, is for the most part,  you have the rivers to yourself.    GET OUT AND FISH, YOU MAY CATCH THE LARGEST  TROUT OF YOUR LIFETIME!

November Fly of the Month Inturder November Fly of the month
Fly Recipe:  The Intruder

The Intruder is November's fly of the month because of how effective it is on our fall and winter Browns and Steelhead.  This fly was designed by Ed Ward and works very well for our migratory game fish.   Like last month,  we are continuing on the tube fly theme.  Tubes allow the angler to tie large flies without using huge hooks.  Most of our fall and winter patterns that we fish are tied on tubes.  Specific tube fly vises are available from Renzetti or you can purchase a HMH Tube Fly Kit that will adapt to any vise.  Give the shop a call if you have any questions on tying our November fly of the month.

                       Octopus hook

Gamakatsu Octopus hook used for tube flies

The preferred hook for this fly (and other tubes) is a short-shank offset bend hook, such as the Gamakatsu Octopus in sizes 1 and 2.  Short-shank hooks have a very good hook-up-to-land ratio compared to other more traditional steelhead bends. Tie the hook on a loop knot and pull the knot into the junction tubing.  This fly is almost always fished on a sink tip with the length and sink rate of the tip dictated by the speed and depth of the run.  Run 3-4 ft of 10# Maxima off the end of the sink tip.  Fish the fly using a downstream swing.   Stop by the shop to see the full run of tube fly hooks.
