The Migrators are coming!!

Fall is here and with it brings a host of fantastic fishing opportunities!  Giant Chinook Salmon, Coho, Monster Brown trout and Steelhead are available to the fall and winter angler.  This is the time of  year that is most overlooked by fly anglers yet offers the best chance at the biggest brown or rainbow of your life.  Rivers like the Oconto, Peshtigo and Menom. will fish fantastic all winter long.  Last winter was by far the best big brown fishing the shop has had in years.  These fish can be caught fishing eggs and nymphs or our preferred method of swinging large flies deep and slow.  Fly patterns change from the realistic to the outrageous.  Fall is the time to shake these fish up with bright and gaudy patterns.  This is why we have chosen Charlies Black Eye Tube for our fly of the month.  Enjoy the pattern and call the shop with any quetions.

October Fly of the Month

Fly Recipe:  Charlie's Black Eye Tube

This fly was chosen as our fall fly of the month because it has proven deadly for both fall run browns and steelhead.  It also introduces many of you to the world of tube flies.  Tubes allow the angler to tie large flies without using huge hooks.  Most of our fall and winter patterns that we fish are tied on tubes.  Specific tube fly vises are available from Renzetti or you can purchase a HMH Tube Fly Kit that will adapt to any vises.  Give the shop a call if you have any questions on tying our October fly of the month.

Materials:

Thread:  Black UTC 70

Tube:  1" HMH Aluminum Tube

Eyes:  Large Gold Dumbell Eyes

Body:  Black Angora Goat

Wing:  Black 1/8" Rabbit Strip topped with 6 Natural Ostrich Plumes and ~10 strands of Holographic Blue Flashabou

Collar:  Dark Blue Marabou, Gadwall, Black Marabou

*Tube mounted in HMH Tube Fly Tool

Tying Directions:

Mount tube to mandrel and secure in vise.

Attach thread and mount eyes to the bottom of the tube.  Leave just enough space ahead of the eyes for four or five wraps of marabou and a small head.
  1. Secure rabbit strip to the back of the tube.  The strip should extend about 2" behind the tube.  Leave about 1/4 inch space on the back to put a piece of rubber tubing before fishing the fly.
  2. Dub a body of Angora goat up to ~ 1/8 inch behind the eyes.  Pull over the front half of the rabbit strip and tie down right behind the eyes.
  3. Tie in 10 strands of flashabou over the top of the rabbit strip.  Tie in 6 Ostrich plumes over the top of the flashabou.
  4. Palmer about 5 wraps of dark blue marabou behind the eyes.
  5. Palmer about 4 wraps of stripped Gadwall flank.
  6. Palmer about 5 wraps of black marabou ahead of the eyes.
  7. Whip-finish and coat head with gloss coat.

Rigging and Fishing:

The preferred hook for this fly (and other tubes) is a short-shank offset bend hook, such as the Gamakatsu Octopus in sizes 1 and 2.  Short-shank hooks have a very good hook-up-to-land ratio compared to other more traditional steelhead bends. Tie the hook on a loop knot and pull the knot into the rubber tubing. This fly is almost always fished on a sink tip with the length and sink rate of the tip dictated by the speed and depth of the run.  Run 3-4 ft of 10# Maxima off the end of the sink tip.  Fish the fly using a downstream swing.

Tight Lines would like to extend a big thank you to all of our customers.  Thank you for helping support the shop and in return we will continue to offer our very best service.
Sincerely,
