I would like to send very loud and appreciative shout out to my staff! A LOT has been asked of each and every one of you. The changes seem never ending and time constraints and program changes are sometimes problematic, but when I ask any one of you to take another person in your group for the day, to completely change what you have planned, or to remain flexible and to be patient with all the new ideas and plans, you work hard to help make this transition go smoothly for the folks we serve. We all had deep concern about the folks going out into the community every day, changing their routines and taking them out of their comfort zone, but I see success out there!! I see folks doing things that they never did before, and coming back here at the end of their day with a big smile on their faces. They are proud, they are happy, and they are becoming a part of the world they live in. So, Amanda, Becky, Billie Jo, Jessica, Heather, Ken, Lisa, Karen,  Mellisa, Theresa, and Tracy, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!   Kathy B.

Greetings!
Welcome to Summer! Here at the Progress Center we are so excited to begin our
season of planning. All of our managers and their teams are preparing for July 23rd,
our agency retreat and awards night at Shawnee Peak. Each team comes to the
event having reviewed their outcomes for this past year, what worked and what
did not. All this work culminates in a proposed plan for this coming year.

At our Retreat all Departments will present "who we are" and must do so in a fun
and creative way. (Rumors are flying about presentations) They also share
accomplishments from this year as well as their plans for this
coming year. It is a fun and wonderful way to learn about each other
celebrate outcomes and performance while creating a unified view of
the future direction of our agency.

Through all of our planning and celebrating our vision and mission remain constant.
The work of the Progress Center staff is focused on community and inclusion
as critical tools to support individual growth.  Each person comes to the
Progress Center, not to be separated from family and friends but to
find his/her unique gifts and roles within their community.

This year we focus on a theme "Change and Leadership". All people within the
agency are reading a simple and fun book called "My Iceberg is Melting"
by Professor Kotter. Do not be fooled by the title, this book deals
with some very complex realities about how companies and agencies
implement needed change. It is not enough to know you need to change,
you must understand how good leadership creates positive change.

Over the past two years as we have changed, all of us have experienced both the
struggle it brings and the power. We have improved our services, our ability to
assess the quality of our work and positively affected the lives of those we support.
I am proud that our annual surveys demonstrate all of this. But much is left to do.
The economy looms over our services and the critical needs of those we serve.
We are facing new challenges, no one can disagree that these days,
this time in our history represents one of the greatest challenges to our
economy since the Great Depression. Changing how we provide for those
who seek our services is essential.

We change not for the sake of it, we change as we grow, learn and challenge
ourselves to greatness.  We are certainly a team committed to excellence, it is
everywhere at TPC. I feel great pride in all of your accomplishments, the joy
I see in people we serve and the strength of your commitment.
I am excited by the possibilities and look forward to yet even more
great things to come.
Stay tuned!

Day of Giving 2009
Community Friends Sharing the Work
dayofgiving2009

With the beautiful weather, about 80 volunteers, good food and great speakers,
we had a very successful day.  This day would not have been possible without
the support we received from our sponsors: New Balance, Key Club, and CMP.
We appreciate their help and support.  We also want to thank Cumberland
Farms for donating free drinks to the group.

We were honored to have our hard work acknowledged by Senators Snowe
and Collins as well as Congressman Michaud.  Diane Jackson read a letter from
Senator Olympia Snowe, Carlene Trembley read one from Senator Susan Collins,
and Andrea Quaid read a letter from Congressman Michael Michaud.

The second phase of the Matthew Record Memorial Park and Trail is cleared and
ready for the rest of the work to begin.  Many trips were made hauling
away the brush, downed trees, etc.  Staff and consumers will continue the work on
their Friday work days feel free to join us anytime.
Don't be shy as we can use all the help we can get on this ambitious project.

Work also continued on the on-going planting of flowers around The Progress
Center.  Everyone did a wonderful job and the Center looks great.

A huge thank you goes to Liz and her crew for the fabulous meal.  Mike, you
look great in an apron and you looked right at home at the grill.

A big thank you also goes to Chris Ivey and the gang from Androscoggin Learning
and Transition Center, the crew from New Balance, Tina from Norway Savings
Bank, Terry and Tim from Key Bank, as well as those from the community who
were there to help with the Matthew Record Memorial Park and Trail.  We appreciate
your continued help and support.  Please let us know if we can help with your
organizations.

A Special Note to all of OUR EXCEPTIONAL
Employees

Raises and Bonuses

It has been a difficult financial year and many sacrifices were made to continue to
provide great services to the people we support. The Board of Directors are very
grateful for the hard work and team effort all of the employees of
The Progress Center made to end the year in good financial standing.

The Board of Directors has approved the Administration's proposal that this year
we make an effort to provide all Direct Support Professionals a small annual raise.
The Board recognizes that the hard work of delivering services begins with each DSP.
You hold our vision and mission. We all want you to know: WE ARE GRATEFUL-YOU
ARE THE CORE OF THIS TEAM.

Once all Direct Support Level employees are given their percentage raises
any remaining residual monies set aside for raises will be given to managers
in the form of bonuses.  Again we would love to do more but in these tight
economic times it was important to remind you that we see the HARD WORK
and COMMITMENT YOU HAVE to those we support everyday and
these bonuses represent our thanks.

We know that you all went without any raises or cost of living increases last year,
you took cuts in hours and ultimately pay to ensure the survival of this
agency. Our financial success would never have been possible had you not
joined with the Board to find financial savings over the past year, been willing to
work harder and do more with less, while remaining steadfast in your dedication
to excellence for the people who come to us everyday.
The Board thanks all of you.

Day Services: What happens during our days!

Larry and crew
The folks who spend their days with us have grown in ways we never dreamed
possible! The daily activity at TPC spans from health and wellness to volunteerism
to employment training. Our day program is growing and changing in many
exciting directions!

After a lot of concern and trepidation over having groups go out into the community
on a daily basis (many wondered how would people we serve adjust to this)
I am pleased and proud to announce that every person involved has made great
strides in overcoming their fears, changing their routines, and  joining their peers
in the community. A wonderful example of success is a gentleman who often
exhibited anxiety whenever it was time to leave the building for an outing, or even
for his ride home. He is now delivering meals in the "Meals on Wheels";
riding in an elevator, knocking on doors, introducing himself and handing out meals
to very appreciative folks. Needless to say, this person is very proud of his
contribution to his community, and we are all very proud of him. We have Center
based folks now asking, "Where are we going today?", in anticipation of  something
new and exciting in their day. We have folks working in our Co-op gardens raking,
weeding and watering plants. Overall physical activities are taking place daily, and
many are enjoying walks in their community after lunch, and meeting together for
the dances monthly. We have a group of young folks who have joined
the Personal Best Gym and they go weekly to work out as they develop their
physical fitness and join other community members in a common activity.

Our Day Services  team would llike to formally welcome Lori Oliver to our
Program and thank her for her wisdom, experience, dedication and determination
to help get us to where we need to be. It's just the beginning folks!

Employment and Transitions
  Gary McPherson

employment team

On January 1st, my company, RM- Transition, Inc. joined forces

with The Progress Center.

In keeping with The Progress Center's mission, myself and nine staff members are
dedicated to  providing quality employment and transition services to consumers of
the Department of Labor, Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation and the
Department of Health and Human Services.  We are currently working with
approximately 40 consumers in various stages of employment throughout the
state including Oxford, Franklin, Androscoggin, and Cumberland counties.

During my tenure as Co-Owner of RM-Transition, Inc.,
I worked largely with transition youth. These are typically high school students getting ready to graduate and enter
the wok force. I am also a member of the Western Maine Advisory Council on
Transition.  This organization is funded by the Department of Education and provides
statewide workshops and leadership training for disabled youth in transition.
One of my goals is to make the younger population who attend The Progress Center
aware of these networking opportunities.  Another goal is to make The Progress
Center more visible to area High Schools, including Telstar High School and
Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.

This summer
, Vocational Rehabilitation is funding work experiences for
six youth
who attend Telstar and Oxford Hills High Schools.  They
will be working for the Oxford Hills
Food Collaborative.  We hope these
students will gain valuable work and social skills, as well
as learning the
value of a paycheck. On the other hand, we at the Progress Center can
identify the accommodations necessary to make these young
adults successful in the world of work.

The Employment and Transition Services group is headquartered in the
Key Bank offices on Main Street in Norway. If you are in the area, stop
by and say hello. We would be happy to tell you more about the
work we do.

Laurie's Notes

Summer Retreat for TPC
Summer Retreat! July 23rd at Shawnee Peak. Day of planning and awards after
dinner. Remember we are looking at Change and reading the book: "My Iceberg
is Melting" Be there it will be great!!!

Sneak Peak:

Happy Feet Dance...it is About Penguins Right?

Transportation:
Erwin has a wheelchair van for sale - see Erwin for more details.  Other than that, Transportation has been moving along quietly and efficiently.  Erwin has trained
Julie I. in transportation billing, so now he can take a vacation.  A short vacation!

Maintenance
Larry and his crew do their best to keep up with everyone's requests.  If you ever
wonder why he hasn't gotten right on your job, come look at his work schedule in
my office. He's pretty busy.  His current project, as of last Thursday, is to create
some beds on the parking spaces in front of the trail head.  You may have
noticed the big piles of soil preventing you from parking there anymore.  It's
going to be beautiful and next year at this time, we'll all be wondering how
we ever used that as parking space.  Plus we'll all be a little healthier from
having to walk a few more feet when we come to work or visit at 35 Cottage
Street.

Finances
Budgets are done and ready for board review and approval.  We are currently
updating finance procedures.  The 2008 audit is done and it's almost time to
prepare for the 2009 audit.  It just never stops!  We have a decent reserve
fund which will help us as the state moves to a new billing system next winter.
Chris Diffin and her crew work hard to keep our billing on track, our bills
paid on time and, most importantly, payroll processed without any major glitches.

Priscilla's Notes

Admin Notes:

We have two more additions to the Admin.Office since the last newsletter, Kristin
Benedix and Christine Diffin.  Kristin has moved her office to the admin building,
Christine has set up shop in the office where Erwin used to be.

Congratulations to Deb Chabot for graduating with an Associates Degree in Applied
Science from Central Maine Community College.  Way to go girl!

Pat V. has left us for the summer to tend to her gardens but she'll be back again
this fall. Stop in and see her at the Farmer's Markets in Norway and South Paris.

Did you know?

The granite post marking the entrance of The Matthew Record Memorial Park and
Trail has been installed.  If you haven't seen it yet take a minute to check out
the wonderful picture of Matt that is also on the post.

The Matthew Record Memorial Park and Trail has been declared a Certified
Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.  A sign indicating
the certification is being placed at the entrance to the trail.  We know that a
Pileated Woodpecker has made the area home.  We often hear the drumming of
his beak in search of food as it sounds like someone striking a tree with a hammer.
The results of his quest for food can be seen on quite a few of the trees.
Last year we also saw deer tracks on the trail.

Tree Works is the official name of the woodworking business that Greg and Bruce
are involved with through the wood shop.  Have you seen the great cutting
boards they make? Or the wonderful benches on our trails?

The Community Meals will be served the first and third Thursday evening of each
month starting in June.  They have been serving between 80 - 120 meals at
the monthly dinners.  The location is the First Universalist Church in Norway.
Everyone is welcome.  Donations are appreciated.

Save the Date!  This year's Employment Recognition Night is October
24th and it will be held at Hebron Academy. More details to be announced later.

The Progress Center Special Olympic team has spiffy new uniforms.  To
complement the new uniforms our neighbors at New Balance donated new
sneakers to the team. THANKS TO NEW BALANCE!
Go Team!

The Food Collaborative
Formerly known as the Food Coop

farmers market

Did you notice that it is no longer the co-op.
That's right, it's the co-lab! Well really collaborative!
Annie, Mike and Alice realized that it isn't so
much a cooperative as a collaborative, hence
the change in terminology.  Annie has been
very busy planting the TPC garden in Oxford.
She and Mike installed a fence all around it
and a irrigation system.

There are going to be some very sad deer in Oxford.  Mike has updated the
OHFC website - it now can be found at this address:
You can order on-line and Mike will deliver the food to your
door or convenient pick-up point.  Check it out!

The co-lab has sold 43 shares, up from 29 last year.  Deliveries begin later this
month - I'm anticipating rhubarb, fresh greens, donuts, eggs, maple syrup, honey,
herbs, fresh bread - the list goes on and on.  I'm getting hungry just thinking
about it.

Dreams to Plans...learning new ways to create
life vision

Deb Peaco, Erlene Smith, Kathy Brown and Terry Cole were asked to
represent the Progress Center this Spring in a project called
"Dreams to Plans" presented by Paul Tabor, Laurie Kimball and Jodi Benvie
from DHHS.  TPC team was one of four agencies from Regions 1 & 2 participating
in the initial meeting. The TPC group completed the task of planning and
presenting "Dreams to Plans" to a group of eight staff at TPC. They facilitated a
presentation and then had a follow-up meeting to discuss outcomes. The team
then attended the final meeting in Gray to present. They were two of the
four teams to complete the project! Go Team Progress Center!
The project is yet another pre-planning tool for those we support.

The process is to ask the person supported what their dream is if they could
have anything froma special vacation or the perfect job, etc. There is a workbook
that guides you through the steps by asking questions and also having a
facilitator illustrate the answers. The team then helps the person supported
find what is important to them in their dream (the seeds at the core of the
dream). The next step is to plant the seed (decide what the supported person
wants to do in their life right now) and then grow the seed (what needs to
happen to get to your goal). This process is graphically illustrated as it is
discussed. The process takes you from "My Dream to My Plan".

Tree Works-a wood shop for your
dream business

Start Your Own Wood Working Business
There is a great opportunity for people who enjoy wood working who may wish to
create a wood project for resale or personal use. We are building and adding to
our small wood working shop. Over the past months Fred and his wood working
men have created many wonderful wood products. The core of the business is
based upon two people we support who love to work with wood. However anyone
who has a desire to begin a cottage business we have a great little place to begin.
Greg and Fred often teach classes in wood working. Other organizations have built
solar panels during a weekend seminar in the shop and Fred builds some beautiful
products to help raise money for the Progress Center. Stop by and check out
our great products and see if you get the urge to build something!

Believe in the power of relationship. It is our greatest gift.

Sincerely,

Deb Anthony
