Hello Friends....

It is hard to believe that Spring is upon us. In a few short weeks the long Winter season will officially end. With Spring there is a wonderful sense of being new, fresh beginnings and promise.

We have come through a hard season of economic changes and difficulties. Jobs have changed, people have given up vacation time, and benefits to continue to make the Progress Center a center of excellence in the Oxford Hills of Maine. We have partnered with our local community to share food, meals, space and the many, many talents of the consumers who seek services from us.

It is said that the the measure of a person is what wakes them up at night. Many of you have spent countless hours awake planning, thinking and giving to this organization. The combined effort of staff, families, consumers and the board of directors allowed us to create a budget and plan that allowed us to prepare for the future with hopefulness.

It is a wonderful season. Our food cooperative begins again, our garden is prepared for the harvest season, our trail grows as phase two begins and is completed by the end of the summer and our warm weather traditions begin once more. Liz's Friday lunch on the grill, Fred's fishing derby, picnics at the lake and summer splash. Life is Good in Oxford Hills. Happy Spring.

Laurie's News--Operations Scoop

fall flowerWelcome Bonnie Chille, our newest Community Case Manager. Bonnie has many years of experience working with adults with disabilities, including mental health issues.  She is settling in quickly and has been busy visiting clients and learning to navigate EIS.  Pam, Debb, Bette and Ashley, in their usual friendly manner, have incorporated Bonnie fully into the case management team.

Terry Cole, and her PCP crew (Deb Peaco, Terry Hoyt) have been holding monthly PCP committee meetings, along with program supervisors and managers.  They are currently looking at ways to truly individualize PCPS, whether through power point presentations, memory boxes, photographs, visits to work sites, video shows.  Please share your ideas about how to help people express and celebrate themselves at PCP meetings (r anywhere, for that matter) with the committee (Terry Cole's ext. is 303).

Julie has become our Therap in-house expert.  She creates ISPs, assists with data entry, updates plans, runs reports - you name it, she can probably figure out how to do it!  Her next big project is to learn how to do the transportation billing.  That will allow Erwin to feel comfortable about taking more than a day or two off at a time!

It's co-op season, and Mike is ramping up for another summer of the logistics of supplying 30 to 50 families with fresh produce delivered right to their front door.  It's a great deal -- $450 for 16 weeks of locally grown greens, herbs, peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, leeks, onion, garlic, shallots (these are like a cross between a garlic and an onion - delicious and stinky!), cukes, summer squash, winter squash, carrots, beets, radishes, and much more!  Filling out the orders are locally produced items such as anadama bread, sourdough bread, whoopie pies, doughnuts, date bars, eggs, honey, maple syrup, and much more!  Every week is like Christmas - you don't know what you will get, but it is all delicious and fresh and healthy.

You can also participate in direct orders, where you order and pay for specific items each week.  Direct orders can also be delivered to your home.  Please see Mike (ext. 209) for more information or to sign up food delivery through the co-op.

Larry is developing a Maintenance Training program, combining DSP work while keeping our facilities running.  He and his team are currently constructing an office in the Admin building (it's going to be Laurie's, so don't get your hopes up!).  They recently built a wall to enclose a new bedroom at Spring Street and will be starting to chip away at the 08/08 energy audit recommendations, starting with KJH.  This week, Larry and his team have had to address several emergency leak situations at the homes - what are you all doing to those dishwashers and washers and toilets, for heaven's sakes!

Erwin continues to run transportation in his low-key and unassuming way.  However, a recent meeting with him revealed the billing and tracking system to be very complex and detailed.  His years as a math teacher are finally paying off!  Erwin suggested training Julie as a back-up for billing - he is eager to ensure that TPC is reimbursed for all the miles staff drive in the course of providing services.  And there are a lot of miles!

Pam Holt is running our HR department.  She is the person to see when you have HR issues, including grievances.  Pam brings years of HR experience to her position.  She orients new staff, maintains databases of information, keeps the personnel files in order, manages benefits, and performs a lot of other unsung but necessary HR functions.

Christen Marshall, our Lead Children's Services staff person, is more and more assuming supervisory duties in that program.  She writes assessments, facilitates annual and 90 day review meetings, writes plans and updates and is learning how to provide DHHS with the very specific information required for this service.  Next steps for Christen: billing and staff supervision!

Recent QA activities have included TCM and CCM file audits, day services billing audits, and safety reviews.  Basically, QA never stops.  We can show up at any moment to review files, look at facilities, and interview clients.  Be a boy scout and Be Prepared!

Quote from Operations: The world is a tangled knot.  Who will untangle that knot?

Safety Training

Sandra with fire extinguisher
Day Program had a special treat when Dennis Yates, Assistant Fire Chief from Norway, and Dave Knox from the Buckfield Fire Department, had a special hands-on fire extinguisher training for the consumers.

Much to the delight of everyone, Dennis and Dave stayed and enjoyed one of the great Friday lunches in the breakroom with the folks.

Snow Shoe Mania

Did you know that every week Ben guides snow shoe trips all around the Oxford Hills? It is great fun and we provide the snow shoes.  Usually 3-5 people go out on these trips. The are open to the public and you many use our snow shoes. If anyone is interested in joining Ben call Priscilla and come on out for some fun! 743-8049.

Home Life  Spring Street Home:

Congratulations to Ross Mackay he quit smoking and has been 6 weeks. He wants to plan a trip to Cape Cod with his friend Mel. The irony of this is that she told him if he quit smoking that she would take him on mini trip, spend a night in a hotel. Well he has shared with staff that he wants to go to the Cape. I realize that if she is unable to take him to the Cape that I will make sure that he goes to the Cape this summer. Kudos to you Ross.

Clyde Nowlin is recovering from injury he received after performing on stage at the Valentine dinner & dance on February 13th.  He also celebrated his 73rd birthday on February 23rd with friends from KJ & his brother Kenneth with cake & gifts. He also announced to all those present to look at Kenneth's wig. You have got to love it.

Greg Mills has moved into a larger bedroom at Spring Street. He chose to paint room a color of light green for his walls. He stepped right in & helped with priming & painting the walls. He has much more room for his wood crafts & a work station area with shelves for his paints. It has been a rough winter with snow accumulations & he has kept right up with snow removal off roofs with roof rake. Thanks Greg.

Miss Elizabeth is busy with her womans group through the Grace Fellowship Church. They meet once a month and also put on various benefit dinners in which she helps with all aspects from planning to clean up. Good Job Miss Betty as we all know in tough economic times it is about giving back.

I would like to welcome our new employee, Rich Mcquiere. Rich brings many years of experience & is a volunteer for His Teen Place, Alpha Omega, and anything that his wife thinks he should be in. He is also on a committee for Hope Haven Gospel Shelter in Lewiston. He will be going on a missionary trip to Mexico in April where he is part of a group of people building a school for children.

News update from the Karla Jacobson home:

Welcome Spring!

As winter slowly goes away and spring is in the air!

The residents at the KJ Home have been very busy as they have attended many events over the past few months. We have certainly made the best of the cold winter days. We attended several Christmas events including Christmas plays and concerts, tree lights ceremonies and craft fairs. We attended several plays and functions at the Odd Fellows Hall in Buckfield, and serval diners at the East Sumner church, where the people are so nice and look forward to us being there. We danced the day away at the Sliver Spur where a gentleman boogied Cheryl right across the dance floor; we love the old time music the bands play. Nate enjoyed at great weekend at winter camp and was so proud to catch the biggest fish! Paul enjoyed a nice day at cross country skiing at Carter's farm in Oxford. We have enjoyed several Movies at Flagship a great thing to do when the weather is cold. Cheryl has been spending time making blankets for gifts for her family members, and started to attend knitting and quilting clubs. Rusty loves to be out side shoveling, he's a busy man with all the snow we got this year! Paul is awaiting spring weather to get back to fishing and trips with his gem club, this past summer he has really got into hiking and mining for rocks. Nate is going to a benefit Dinner and auction in West Paris There is a very special guest Nate is excited to see, Rickie Craven will be attending the dinner and hosting the auction, Nate is a huge Race fan so he is very excited to go.  We also attend the air show in Brunswick , We had a great time looking at all the planes and Paul Climbed the big rock wall. We are busy, busy here at KJH and More to come with the warm weather coming!

Committee News and Views

Employment Advisory Committee:

At the February meeting the committee met with Fred and two consumers he works with.  Both consumers talked about their volunteer positions as well as what they do in the woodshop.  Fred explained what he does as a DSP and how he supports the two individuals he work with.  Fred also talked about the plans to turn the woodshop into a business.

EAM Fred and guys

The Employment Advisory Committee meets the second Wednesday of the month at the Employment Offices in the KeyBank building.  The purpose of the Advisory Committee is to assist the The Progress Center in obtaining jobs and volunteer positions in the Oxford Hills area of Maine for individuals with disabilities
.

Community Dinner Committee:

On 2/5/09 we had our first community dinner /soup kitchen meeting. Our new community members are Marion F., Bill S.and Ross M. We had some great guest and got some great information on how to get people to come to our dinners. They also gave up some good input into how to get help on soup kitchen. Since the meeting we also had one of our members call and donate a lot of fresh home made bread, our next dinner is on 2/19/09.

Employer Recognition Night Event Committee:

We still need a few more volunteers for this fun committee. We have several members already and the first meeting is in March. This committee helps to plan our biggest annual event to recognize the employers who work with us each year to employ the folks we support. Last year we had a wonderful night at the Hilton Garden with guest speaker Bill Erwin and too many local celebs and politicians to count. This year we are going to be even bigger, better and more creative. Come help us plan this night, it is a great cause and helps us to raise dollars for this great agency. Call Priscilla or Deb to find out more.

Admin News and Views:

Remodeling:  We're at it again.  Larry has constructed a new office for Laurie.  She's had so many offices at the Center that she ran out of places she hadn't been in so they had to build a new one for her.  No, not really but we've stopped counting the number of offices Laurie has had.  She's our resident nomad!  Hopefully, this time she's found a home that will be hers for a long time.

Larry and crew

Human Resources: Pam is back doing Human Resources for The Progress Center.  If you need to talk with her about an issue she can be reached at ext. 206 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  The new HR office is the one by the copier where Laura used to be.

Finance Department: The Finance Department has been consolidated into one area.  Laura and Deb C. share the office across from Deb A. and Pat is in the one next to that, where Pam used to be.  Laura's new phone extension is 231.  Don't worry, if you get lost we'll guide in the right direction.  Chris Diffin has also joined our staff on a part-time basis.  Welcome aboard Chris!

Fundraising: I've been busy getting ready for our 2nd Day of Giving on June 5th.  We hope to have the day sponsored by larger businesses as well as more volunteers than last year.  There will also be team fundraising events this year.....details to be announced soon!

Reception:  Sarah has not only learned to type but has taken on more responsibilities.  Some of her duties include some filing for the finance department, greeting guests, answering a very busy 6-line switchboard, doing miscellaneous typing projects, and creating a consumer webpage for The Progress Center website as well as writing consumer articles for the newsletter.

Miscellaneous:  We recently celebrated two birthdays in the Admin. Building.  I won't mention any names, but both Deb and Laurie say they don't feel any older.
