Screening of Student Film - June 14 All Are Invited
On Thursday,
June 14th at 7:30 PM, Clarkstown North High School students Augustus Fisher and Matthew Marchese
will be screening their ten minute film "Mystery on Main Street," a 1940s-style black & white film featuring a cast of adult professionals in North's auditorium located at 151 Congers Road, New City. Admission is free. There will be a Q&A with the student filmmakers after the show.
Fisher and Marchese wrote, directed and produced the short as a project of Clarkstown North's TV Studio. Finishing up their freshman year at North, Fisher and Marchese were recently inducted into Clarkstown North's English Honor Society for their screenplay and were given the MSG Filmmakers Award.

National Honor Society Inducts 47 CTEC Students
Forty-seven Rockland BOCES Career and Technical Education students were inducted, in two separate ceremonies, into the National Technical Honor Society on Thursday, May 31. The National Technical Honor Society is the nation's highest honor for excellence in career and technical education. To qualify for nomination, a student must maintain a 90 average or better in career education courses, demonstrate leadership and skill development and be involved in school and/or community service. As part of the ceremonies, 102 CTEC students were also recognized for achieving honor roll status during the 2011-12 school year.

NHS Student Receives Medal from Prestigious University On Friday June 1st Clarkstown High School North junior Jenna Weinstein was awarded The George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) Medal. This honor is awarded to a junior who has obtained a high grade point average in the fields of mathematics and science and has been instrumental in successfully meeting other criteria in the judgment of the science faculty. The medal was presented to Jenna by Mr. Dennis Covert, North's Science Department Co-Chair, in Mr. Morris' AP Physics B class.

SHS Student's Artwork Chosen for College Board Publication
 Artwork by Sierra Perez, a senior at Clarkstown South High School, is featured in the Vertical Team Guide to AP Studio Art, which has recently been published by the College Board. Sierra, also the Vice President of the National Art Honor Society, completed three distinct AP Studio Art portfolios in the past two years at South. Congratulations to Sierra! In addition, a cd that accompanies the guide includes artwork by senior Diana Lee and class of 2011 graduates Tara Holland, Shannon Kopunek, and Juliane Ng.

Child's Play Touring Theater at Strawtown Elementary
Child's Play Touring Theater is a Chicago-based professional theater for young audiences that performs original works adapted from stories and poems submitted by students in the months prior. The performance consists of several fun short skits that include original live music, dancing and audience participation.

Thomas Edison's Lighter Side
The fourth grade students at Woodglen Elementary were treated to an entertaining and engaging presentation on the inventions of Thomas Edison. The presenter used humor and knowledge to engage the students and they were eager to join in, sharing what they already knew about Mr. Edison. They especially enjoyed the stories of the great inventors comedic side.

Children's Health Fair at Laurel Plains
Last month, Laurel Plains Elementary School held its fifth Health, Safety and Wellness Fair. During the fair, the children learned about health and safety from thirty three community and parent experts, building on the curriculum already taught. Most of the presentations involved hands-on experiences such as simulating putting out a fire with a hose or working in an ambulance as it rushes a patient to the hospital. Additional topics included in the fair were dental care, brain safety, importance of proper nutrition and exercise, bone health, bike safety, internet safety, dog safety, water safety, Jump 4 Heart, basic first aid, living with disabilities, demonstration of the Heimlich maneuver, yoga, and karate.

Student Assembly Focuses on Friends
Throughout the year first grade students at Woodglen Elementary discussed the qualities that make someone a good friend. This May the students were given the opportunity to present what they had learned at the May Spirit Assembly.
With the help of music teacher Ms. Samantha Priore and first grade teachers Mrs. Eileen Cording, Mrs. Abby Kahn, Mrs. Lisa Gould, Mrs. Ilene Mirenberg, and Dr. Marianne Strayton, students used movements, songs, and artwork to capture the qualities necessary to cheer up our friends and helping each other.

Broccoli Rob Visits Woodglen
Woodglen Elementary students were treated to The Broccoli Rob Show to kick off Wellness Week. This is an interactive, musical performance meant to inspire students to make healthy food choices. The Broccoli Rob Show included songs about tomatoes, spinach and other fruits and vegetables that kids could incorporate into their diets.

North Students Volunteer at Woodglen Elementary
North High School students volunteered their time at Woodglen Elementary to help the kindergartners celebrate Earth Day. The high school students organized nine differently themed centers for the event, such as water conservation, land use, recycling, littering, the web of life, predators and prey, and planting. The children enjoyed the hands on centers and also enjoyed working together with the high school students. |
