This past February, many Strawtown fifth graders participated in the Modern Woodsmen Speech Contest. Modern Woodsmen is an organization which encourages young children around the country to sharpen their skills in speech writing and public speaking. This year, students were asked to write on the topic, "A Time When Volunteers Made a Difference." Participants wrote and presented speeches not only grounded in their own personal volunteer experiences, but historical and international volunteer efforts as well. The 2012 winner from Strawtown, Irisa Dong, went on to compete at the District wide contest. Congratulations to Irisa and all of Strawtown's Participants!

Calendar image The Experience of a Lifetime
A Semester of Study in Israel
Avi Lurie, a sophomore at Clarkstown High School North, took off for Israel on January 29 to complete tenth grade through the USY-TRY program. He is in Jerusalem until June 4.

Avi is completing all of his secular classes through the program and is enjoying some incredible experiences along the way. On Yom HaShoah, he met Israel's Prime Minister Mr. Benjamin (Bibi) Netanyahu at Yad Vashem! Avi's group participated in Gadna (Israeli army preparation training - it is quite rigorous) and out of the 55 students in his program, Avi was awarded the All-Around Excellence Award.

Calendar imageIn addition to his secular classes, the largest of which has six students, Avi takes Israel core courses and Hebrew Studies. In conjunction with ICC classes, the group travels around the country seeing and experiencing what they are studying.

Avi is keeping in touch with many of his CHSN friends and teachers. His CHSN teachers and guidance counselor were instrumental in his participation in this program, as they provided the necessary curricular information for the Israeli teachers. Avi looks forward to returning to CHSN after completing this amazing program.

Calendar image Today's Students Tomorrow's Teachers
Today's Students Tomorrow's Teachers (TSTT) is an organization to help minority high school and college students who are interested in becoming future educators, to become more familiar with the education profession. Every year, a recognition breakfast is held to honor all TSTT supporters, teachers and students. Since 1994, TSTT has dedicated itself to increasing student achievement, college graduation, teaching certification, teacher retention and overall teacher quality. TSTT also helps to place teachers back in their communities as teachers and leaders. Two seniors from Clarkstown North High School (Ariel Sanchez and Samantha Quispe) as well as one senior from Clarkstown South High School (Stephanie Roman) were honored for their commitment to TSTT and for fulfilling all high school requirements of the program.

Anti-bullying Program
Thanks to the initiative of the Clarkstown Community Task Force, the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program has been implemented in almost all of our elementary schools, Felix Festa Middle School, Birchwood, and is the basis for North High School's and South High School's bullying prevention initiatives. The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is based on over thirty-five years of research and has had successful implementations all around the world. It is a long-term, system-wide program for change that involves program components at four levels: School Level, Classroom Level, Individual Level, and Community Level.
