The Class of 2012's Valedictorians and Salutatorians are Announced North High School is pleased to announce their Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the NHS Class of 2012. Robert Duggan, son of Cynthia and William Duggan, earned the title of Valedictorian by having the highest cumulative average in the class. In addition he was a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition and a semifinalist in the United States Presidential Scholars Competition. The Salutatorian for the Class of 2012 is Alina Dvorovenko, daughter of Ludmila Dvorovenko and Vladimir Khimich. Both Robert & Alina will be attending Cornell University this coming fall.
South High School is pleased to announce their Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the SHS Class of 2012. Sarah L. Mistele, daughter of Katherine and William Mistele, earned the title of Valedictorian by having the highest cumulative average in the class. The Salutatorian for the Class of 2012 is Andrew Kim, son of Ja Kyoung and Sinho Kim. Sarah will be attending Penn State University - Schreyer Honors College, and Andrew will be attending Princeton University. Sarah and Andrew have also each been awarded the $2500 National Merit Scholarship.
Congratulations to these remarkable students for their outstanding achievements and their successful four years in Clarkstown.

National History Day State Competition Winners Over 450 students from around the state participated in the National History Day Competition a few weeks ago. Out of the sixteen South High School students who attended, nine placed in their categories. The first and Second place winners will advance to the National competition at the University of Maryland on June 10th through the 14th.

Voices Of Bullying Innovative Contest Clarkstown North English teachers Karen Czajkowski and Sabrina Riccoboni and Assistant Principal Amy Franchi organized a school-wide contest centered around the topic of bullying. Students of CHSN were provided with contest guidelines and information by their English teachers and submitted work in one of three categories: prose, poetry, or poster art. All work will be included in a book the teachers will put together called Clarkstown North: Voices of Bullying and winning work will receive additional recognition. The English Department hopes to distribute the book to the incoming freshman class next school year.

Shopping Extravaganza Raises $2000 for Make-A-Wish Clarkstown South's Assets Leadership Team held its first Outdoor Shopping Extravaganza and it was a huge success. It was a day filled with shopping, food, fun and great entertainment. The highlight of the day was a performance by the Spirit Hip Hop Club who kept getting invited back to the stage for encores! The assets leadership team thanks all who devoted their day and helped to raise $2000 for Make-A-Wish. |
Bardonia Kindergarteners Speak for the Trees Ms. Negrin's Kindergarten class has been learning about recycling and how to take care of the Earth. They read The Lorax and responded with how they might help the Earth. In addition, each child wrote about what they would do if they were given the last truffala seed! |
Wildcats Spotted at the Natural History Museum The West Nyack Elementary School Fifth graders visited the Natural History Museum on Tuesday, May 1st. The trip was a huge success and the day was filled with scavenger hunts, science experiments and dinosaur bones! Many thanks to the Fifth Grade Moving Up Committee and to the many moms and dads that helped out. |
Earth Day at Woodglen Woodglen kindergarteners and their fifth grade learning buddies teamed up for Earth Day this year, collecting litter left on the school grounds and planting flowers in the school's gardens. Students at Woodglen contribute each day to energy conservation and recycling, understanding that their daily efforts make for a better tomorrow. The kindergarten teachers partnered with Keep Rockland Beautiful to organize this clean-up and look forward to continuing these learning opportunities in the future. |

The participants met many times with their adviser, Ms. Loren Raimo, to edit their speeches, to rehearse and to have timed practices. As a result the speeches they gave were high quality, well received and full of interesting and heartfelt content. The topic for this year's contest was "Volunteerism" and our students responded with heartfelt words for the US Military, the world wars, Mohandas Gandhi, our local Hi-Tor Animal Center and a parent.
Tyler Derderian went on to compete at Felix Festa and once again came in first place, winning the Elementary School Division. He gave his speech at the May 2 Board of Education meeting. The honorable mentions will be highlighted at our upcoming Woodglen Spirit day. |
Wanted! Marketing Assistant Intern The Clarkstown Community Learning Center (part of the Clarkstown Central School District) is seeking an individual to be part of our growing program. This unpaid internship will give this individual an opportunity to be involved in all aspects of our marketing efforts to increase programming and enrollment. Projects will include developing our brochure, email marketing, social media engagement and more. The Community Learning Center has an audience of varying ages and attracts hundreds of students each year.
The deadline to apply is May 18, 2012.

MADD Provides Strengthening Families Program The Strengthening Families Program is an internationally recognized family skills training program found to significantly reduce behaviors problems, delinquency, and alcohol and drug abuse and to improve social competencies and school performance in children. This program, developed by Dr. Karol Kumpfer, professor at the University of Utah, has been proven effective in 50 states and 17 foreign countries.
In the past, the Clarkstown Community Task Force in conjunction with CANDLE had been able to offer the program to Clarkstown families. We are proud to announce that the Strengthening Families Program is now available for in-home use through the efforts of MADD.
