South DECA Wins Big in State Competition

After a six-hour bus ride, packed with studying and rehearsing, Clarkstown South DECA arrived in Rochester to compete against over 1,800 participants in various business-related competitions. Students had written business operations manuals, put together public service TV commercials, and created elaborate sales presentations. Others built prospectuses for new businesses or international expansion, studied for tests, and honed their skills to evaluate business problems and develop viable marketing solutions. Some students spent months researching company problems, and wrote 30-page proposals to improve a company's operations and their bottom line. Others took tests and studied scenarios, for which they had to come up with and present solid solutions. The conference was a true test of business and marketing acumen and communications skills.

North High School Shared-Decision Making Team Conducting Teen Stress Survey
Calendar imageTeen stress is an important, yet sometimes overlooked, health issue. Everyone knows that teens face stress on various levels and from many different sources. The way teens cope with this stress can have significant short- and long-term consequences on their physical and emotional health. For this reason, the Clarkstown North Shared Decision-Making Team, led by Principal Harry Leonardatos, is surveying parents, students and staff about student stress. This survey aims to identify those items faced by students that cause the MOST stress. The survey takes less than two minutes to complete and the results will be carefully review by the Shared Decision Making Team to help plan for appropriate school-based programs that address these issues The deadline for completing the survey is April 5.

NHS PTSA Hosts Presentation and Draws a Large Audience
On Tuesday, March 6th the Clarkstown High School North PTSA hosted a presentation entitled, "Out of the Driver's Seat: How to Successfully Coach Your Child Through the College Years." This free workshop was presented by Vicki Nelson of College Parent Central. Approximately fifty parents attended and benefited from the information presented.

"Much like a good coach, parents can hover productively, at a distance, guiding their student toward independence, if they have the right information," says Vicki Nelson of College Parent Central. At the presentation parents learned about making the transition from high school to college; preparing for changes in your college student; embracing your new role as a college parent; understanding FERPA and other parental rights; understanding college life and college expectations of both you and your student; and improving communication with your college student. It was an enlightening presentation and everyone who attended had positive reviews!

Woodglen Celebrates PARP With Special Events
Calendar imagePARP (Parents As Reading Partners) is a program that asks parents to read with their children for at least fifteen minutes a day, stressing that reading can be fun as well as informative. Students are encouraged to choose any form of reading material that they enjoy, books, magazines, newspapers, etc. The daily activity of reading together strengthens reading and communication skills in the child and also strengthens the parent/child relationship. Note: The term 'parents' may be interpreted broadly to include all adults who play an important role in a child's life. Last week, as part of this program, all students participated in a reading assembly led by The Hip Pickles. Throughout this week students participated in PARP within the classroom. Students shared reading challenges and were treated to guest readers.
