North High School Artists Lend Their Talent To KinderNorth
This past January, a talented group of Clarkstown North art students led by art teacher Nancy Diamond, got together to paint colorful murals on the walls of the KinderNorth Preschool classroom at North High School. The project was made possible by an Innovative Learning Grant awarded to Family and Consumer Science Teacher, Allison Borrelli, by the Clarkstown North PTSA.

KinderNorth Preschool is a unique, decade-old and highly regarded community program where high school students enrolled in child development classes are the student-teachers. Student volunteers from the North Art Honors Society painted the previously white KinderNorth walls in bright colors and added whimsical murals and images of a fish tank, a princess castle, Dr. Seuss' "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" and more.

For Allison Borrelli, there is no doubt that the young children enrolled in KinderNorth will greatly benefit from the classroom makeover. "Any preschool classroom should be a warm, inviting atmosphere, full of life and vitality. I am so grateful to these students and to the North PTSA for making it all happen."

The student volunteers were: Amanda Samodio, Bridget Kunz, Deb Winograd, Stephanie Chouljian, Mariel Greenburg, Michel Greenburg, Samantha Olinsky, Steni Stephan and Julie Furlan. Thanks also to the support of the North High School custodial staff and the generosity of Vanderbilt Hardware and Paint Center in New City.

NHS Science Olympiad
Clarkstown North's two Science Olympiad Teams finished tied for 16th place out of 32 teams. Special thanks to Rebecca Torres, Kim Hashim, Rob Morris, and Gene Murphy who helped organize, coach, and manage all aspects of the endeavor.

International Night at Link World School
Over 400 parents, teachers, children, and members of the community gathered at Link Elementary School for our annual International Night, featuring student performers ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. This annual tradition began sixteen years ago as a food tasting event for our multicultural studies and has evolved into a rich community celebration of our diversity. In her opening, Mrs. Cuccia stated that she was "...especially proud of the Link Familys' acknowledgement and respect for the diverse cultures and traditions that make up our school, community and country." For their finale, the children chose to sing, "Proud to be American." While many teachers, parents and children contributed to the success of this wonderful event, a special "thank you" went to Lynn Farry for her devotion and leadership.

Valentine's for Veterans: From Link with Love
This year the entire student body of Link Elementary proudly participated in the Valentines for Veterans Program. The program, a national initiative, was developed to encourage Americans to deliver valentines to retired and active duty military personnel. This initiative teaches young people the importance of honoring our veterans at home and our soldiers overseas. Over four hundred cards were written by the students! Cards were decorated with artwork and personalized messages of thanks to convey their support and appreciation of the troops and to lift the spirits of those American far from home.

Storyteller Visits Link Elementary - Shares History of Mount Rushmore
Storyteller, singer and actor, Lou Del Bianco portrays his grandfather and tells the story of Luigi Del Bianco and his unique contribution to the carving of our nation's greatest memorial, Mount Rushmore. The students viewed historic photos and documents in a PowerPoint presentation that made the story come to life! They learned about the life of an Italian immigrant that came to America with a dream and fulfilled it. They also heard how the memorial was carved, how big the faces are and some of the problems that were encountered along the way.

Herb Garden at Little Tor
The students at Little Tor have been busy planting an herb garden as a part of their "green" initiative. Through the Farm to School program and the squash tasting in October, they learned that it is good to eat healthy, local produce. As an extension of that program, students have planted an herb garden, will care for it through the winter months and hope to harvest some fresh herbs (basil, parsley, etc..) that they can share with Little Tor's food services department.

Woodglen's Third Grade Spirit Olweus Assembly
The third grade students participated in a recent assembly about the importance of being who they are. The students learned to celebrate their uniqueness but to also remember we are all ONE. We sang the song "Be Yourself" by David Grover.

Fourth Grade Spirit Olweus Assembly at Woodglen
Fourth grade students at Woodglen Elementary School presented their Spirit Assembly incorporating academic vocabulary related to character traits the students are exploring in literacy and in Olweus meetings. Students presented their character traits/synonym posters and acted out their vocabulary words. They then sang a song, "Character Tango" to convey their message of making positive choices to act in good character. Students performed the tango to accompany the song. Fourth grade teachers and Ms. Priore, Woodglen's music teacher, collaborated on assisting students in their performance.

Fourth Grade Spirit Olweus Assembly at Woodglen
Kindergarten through fifth grade students at Woodglen Elementary School created colorful Valentine's Day hearts with special messages to share with veterans and people special to them. Ms. O'Neill worked with students during art class to create heart drawings based on pop artist Jim Dine, who was known for painting hearts. Some students drew Valentine's Day cards with heartfelt messages and colorful designs, which will be going to veteran groups and nursing homes.

The Sweetest Valentines
Valentine's Day at the Chestnut Grove Administration Building was a little sweeter this year with the inclusion of the Childcare program in the building's festivities. Sticky fingers and chocolate-laced faces were abundant as the children enjoyed some delicious cupcakes with very messy chocolate frosting. The special treat was in balance with the assortment of fruit, veggies, and breakfast bagels available as well.

When the children were finished with their special treat, they mingled with the staff and created Valentine's Day projects. It was nice to feel the energy and happiness in the room on this special day. The staff assisted the children with their projects and enjoyed making delightful conversation with our youngest students. It really was a Happy Valentine's Day!
