Dignity For All
Superintendent Dr. Meg Keller-Cogan has recommended to the Board of Education that Clarkstown form a task force to address NYS legislation on bullying in school environments. The BOE fully supported the recommendation.

The Dignity for All Students Act must be implemented in school districts across the State by July 2012. The law amends New York Education Law to prohibit harassment against students in school, including harassment based on real or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender (including gender identity and expression) and sex, and to prohibit discrimination based on these same characteristics.

Among the first actions being taken has been a review of our district's code of conduct calling for a "zero tolerance" policy for bullying behavior. The changes are currently being reviewed by the BOE's policy subcommittee. The amended policy will be voted on by the BOE at an upcoming meeting.

The Superintendent has sent letters of invitation to various county groups, the Town of Clarkstown, the police, each unit president and the PTA. The PTA will be partnering with the school district on the task force work as well as supporting the implementation of whatever changes result from recommendations being made.

The Dignity for All Task Force will begin its work in January 2011. It is being chaired by Felix Festa A School principal, Mr. Kevin Horan and co-chaired by assistant principals Ms. Amy Franchi, NHS and Ms. Deb Tarantino, SHS. The Task Force will examine three components of bullying. These areas include:

  • Programs (instructional, preventative measures the district is or will be taking)
  • Accountability (implications for policy, including changes to the Student Code of Conduct) and
  • Cyber-bullying (communications made electronically that target or defame individuals or groups)

The district's goal in forming this communitywide task force is to provide broad reaching support to assure that students, staff and visitors to our schools are treated respectfully and fairly.

It's All About SPIRIT
The Art Honor Society at North High School has initiated an Arts Inclusion program with SPIRIT students from South. The SPIRIT Program provides alternate academic instruction and vocational readiness preparation for special needs students. For a series of seven Tuesdays, SPIRIT students were invited to North High School after school to work with North students on creative projects. Many students from North wanted to be involved so a number of clubs and classes are collaborating with the Art Honor Society in an effort to offer a broad range of activities for their SPIRIT partners.

On October 26th, the Art Honor Society and SPIRIT students celebrated the season by making handprint turkey paintings. From November 9th -30th the SPIRIT students made beautiful music with music teacher Pat Magliano and his students, creating a CD in Garage Band. On Dec. 14, the Hip Hop Club will be hosting a Dance workshop, and the final project will be on Dec. 21 when the Chain Reaction Club will host a gingerbread decorating workshop.

The program allows all students to share their gifts and learn from each other. Nancy Diamond, North High School art teacher and program coordinator, stated "Students from both schools enjoy working collaboratively on projects and using their creativity as a common ground. This is an awesome program."

Caring for the Community is Elementary
Each of our elementary schools is engaged in activities to share with students the importance of being involved in the local community. Below are a few highlights.

Congers
Congers Elementary School teaches students the importance of taking care of those in the community. Approaching holiday time, Principal Martha Ryan identifies families within the Congers community who are facing challenging circumstances. The students, parents and staff come together to provide Thanksgiving feasts. Steve Campanella, a Congers parent, generously donates turkeys from his business, Steve's Prime Meats. Principal Ryan also get lists of toy and clothing needs. Staff, students and parents take mittens hanging on school lobby doors which list those items. The gifts are delivered to families in time for the holidays.

Congers Elementary's Olweus anti-bullying team has registered the school for the Pennies for Peace program to build schools for girls in Afghanistan. The students are eager to begin this fund-raising effort.

Strawtown
One of the key efforts to keep charitable giving at the forefront at Strawtown is dress down day. Every Friday, for a donation to charity staff can dress casually. It is a weekly reminder to students to think about others less fortunate in their communities. Strawtown also makes it a priority to support the troops, sending care packages and thank you notes to our brave soldiers and veterans on various holidays.

A Pajama Party for A Good Cause at Festa
Felix Festa Middle School participated in a "Pajama Program," in partnership with the Scholastic Book Company. The Pajama Program is a not for profit organization which provides new, warm pajamas and books to children around the country. Scholastic Book Clubs donates a new book for every pair of pajamas donated. Festa Chain Links Club, advisor Christine Madigan and Peer Leaders spearheaded this initiative. Principal Dianne Basso proclaimed November 24th as "Festa Pajama Day". Students donating a pair of pajamas were also able to wear a pair to school. The students were invited to "Drop Everything & Read" period for all staff and students to relax while reading.

Birchwood Providing Food and Clothing To Those in Need
In keeping with the spirit of the holiday season, Birchwood, under the guidance of Helene Katz and Marcia Frey, has its charitable efforts well underway to help those less fortunate. Their food drive is going strong, with collected goods to be given to Meals on Wheels, the Rockland County Emergency Food Cupboard and to Soup Angels, a soup kitchen where one of the Birchwood students volunteers each week. Birchwood is also sponsoring a coat drive and will be collecting gently used coats up until the end of December. Fine Line Cleaners in New City generously offered to clean all coats donated, which will be given to community members in need. Regina Baxter's class will be collecting new hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and socks for the "Winter Warmth Giving Tree" through the end of this month.
