Clarkstown's English Language Arts Achievement Soars

The 2009 administration of the New York State English Language Arts assessments in grades 3-8 reflect gains at every grade level and in all schools. Not only did the percent of students reaching proficiency increase across the board, (students who reach levels three and four out of four) but the number of students reaching mastery (four out of four) increased as well.  These gains are attributed to parent, student, staff and district efforts. A special thank you to the teachers for the excellence reflected in our results and for all those involved in professional development, curriculum and data analysis efforts. Our district has worked very hard in the past three years to align our resources in a targeted manner while focusing upon the areas of greatest need. The 2009 results found below indicate the effort has resulted in significant across the board improvements.

Overall, the District experienced significant gains from 2007-2008 to 2008-2009 in the percent of students who scored at Levels 3 and 4 on the ELA 3-8 assessments:

On Friday, May 1, more than 420 middle and high school students from 13 regions throughout New York State gathered for the New York State History Day competition held in the Village of Cooperstown. The state contest, sponsored by the New York State Historical Association, is a yearlong history education program that challenges students in grades 6-12 to produce exceptional scholarship on topics in history related to an annual theme. As is becoming tradition, Clarkstown students performed exceptionally well, earning many of the top honors. First and second place winners in each category advance to National History Day at the University of Maryland, College Park, in June, to compete with history scholars from throughout the country.
