Susan Simpson is more than a Science Communication Biological Technician (which might be the coolest job in the world).  She is a terrific writer who is sharing fascinating information about her work in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Read her Dispatches from the Field on the National Park Service website.

National Public Lands Day- Give Your Time To The Smokies

On Saturday, September 25th, many public lands across the country will be holding events to celebrate National Public Lands Day.  It's our country's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands (like Great Smoky Mountains National Park) Americans enjoy.  In recognition, Great Smoky Mountains National Park will host two volunteer trail projects.

The Park is currently recruiting volunteers for two trail projects that are supported through the National Park Foundation and the Trails Forever Program.  They are the Cosby Nature Trail
in the Cosby Campground (TN) and the Smokemont Nature Trail (NC) in the Smokemont Campground.  Work on both trails will involve installing waterbars, maintaining existing drainage structures, removing social trails, defining the trail tread and installing trail signs.

Work hours are between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on both projects.  Staff will provide all the necessary equipment needed, including work gloves. for the projects.

Volunteers should come prepared to work for a day in the woods and must be able to hike, safely perform manual labor, and be comfortable using hand tools.  Participants should wear sturdy footwear and long pants.  Pack a lunch and BRING PLENTY OF WATER.

To attend, interested persons must be at least 12 years old and must RSVP by September 17th to the Trails & Facilities Volunteer Coordinator Christine Hoyer at (828) 497-1949 or e-mail her at Christine_Hoyer@nps.gov.

At the time of RSVP, volunteers will receive more project and trailhead information.

If you aren't planning to be in Knoxville on Saturday, you can support Friends of the Smokies at the King Family Library located at 408 High Street, Sevierville, TN  37862 for an informal reception to celebrate publication of "A Beautiful View: Reflections on Bluff Mountain, Tennessee- Matriarch Marian E. Oates".

According to editor Laura Long Martin, publisher of SevierCountyNews.com
the book is a community collection of stories about Marian Oates and her contributions to Sevier County, Tennessee.  The book also includes local history about Bluff Mountain, which was developed by Marian's parents, Frank and Emma Ree Oates.

A beloved humanitarian in Sevier County (and a longtime supporter of Friends of the Smokies) and beyond, Marian Oates left a legacy when she passed on July 12, 2009 that included a gift of 510 acres of Bluff Mountain to the Foothills Land Conservancy.

The book will be available for purchase ($14.99) at the reception or by writing SevierCountyNews.com or by calling (865) 428-5711.

For more information, please contact Laura Long Martin.

Half of all book sales revenue is donated to Friends of the Smokies in accordance with Marian's wishes.
