Come to Mom Congress

Parenting Magazine and Georgetown University are planning the 2012 Mom Congress - and you can be there. This annual event connects mothers who've made a difference in their local schools to experts and education advocates in Washington, DC.

The three day event takes place from April 29 - May 1, 2012, which is the most gorgeous time to be in the Nation's Capital.  You can enter a contest to be one of the 51 mothers, from each state and the District of Columbia, who wins an all expenses paid trip for the event.  All you have to do is submit a photo and a 300 word essay (you can write that much during naptime!) about how you or the mother you are nominating has changed a school for the better.  Here's the form you need to fill out, and here are the contest rules. A much longer first person description can be found right here.

You have to get your submission in before February 15, 2012.  If you come, please let me know.  Your (Wo)Man in Washington would love to meet you while you are here!

'Til next time,
Your (Wo)Man in Washington

AuthorsAuthors in Our Midst

Lorri Slepian, NAMC founder, leadership advisor and board member, and Linda Lisi Juergens, NAMC Executive Director, each authored a chapter in the reference book The 21st Century Motherhood Movement: Mothers Speak Out on Why We Need to Change the World and How To Do It, edited by Andrea O'Reilly. Their chapters were based on remarks they made at an international mothering conference in Toronto, Canada organized by the Association for Research on Mothering.

Lorri's chapter is entitled "The Birth And Evolution of the National Association of Mothers' Centers: My Radical Hope" and Linda's is "MOTHERS Uniting and Organizing for Change: The Next Step in Building a Mothers' Movement."

Congratulations to Lorri and Linda for a wonderful accomplishment and contribution to the world!

Music for Autism
February 2012

The NAMC recently learned of free music programs for children with autism.  Volunteer musicians donate their time and talents in concerts that are geared toward the needs of autistic children. They can get up from their seats, dance, and react to the music in ways that might not be inappropriate in other venues.

Check out Music for Autism which arranges shows nationally.
