DispatchDC Dispatch - Caregivers: Sick Of Not Being Paid

Capitol

Women and family advocates simply refuse to ease up their efforts in spite of the dismal economic climate.  Recent events in and around Capitol Hill include a day-long symposium on how women would change the U.S. Congress if more of them were elected.  The "brain trust" at the Brookings Institute hosted economists and sociologists, including maternal economics expert Heather Boushey, for a discussion about the disconnect between a work culture that assumes there is a full-time caregiver at home, and family data that shows 2/3 of parents do paid work outside the home.  Read more here.

Mother-Baby in Sling
New mom from Mothers' Center in Bratislava, Slovakia

Does anybody have a seamless transition into motherhood?  Lots of women find their way to a "new normal" at a Mothers Center.  This radio report features mothers in a similar program as they struggle with real motherhood and real babies, who don't always behave as depicted in magazines and advertising.  You can either read the story or listen on your computer.

GenXGen X Women 'Opt Out' of Motherhood

It's official - about 43% of American women between 33 and 46 do not have children.  Why?  One commentator's theory: "Attribute it to more opportunities in the workforce, relaxing social pressure, advances in contraception or watching women such as myself slip into an increasingly disheveled state of hysteria for years after childbirth and vowing not to follow suit."   In fact, there's a direct link between the state of the economy and the national birthrate.  The states and ethnicites hardest hit are the ones with the sharpest drop in fertility.  The news prompted this Washington Post feature and a radio story from NPR.

DiscriminationGender Discrimination and The Law

Woman LawyerWomen have made up about half of law school graduates since 1993.  But rather that reaching parity in the profession, they are no more than a third of attorneys in practice, a quarter of all state judges, and just over one fifth of federal judges.  What happens to the rest of them?  Is there something about the law that effectively pushes out an unusually high number of women?  Here's a clue:  "Women with children are having the hardest time staying in the profession. They are half as likely to be hired, a recent Cornell studyfound, when compared with childless women with similar qualifications."  The complete New York Times editorial is here.

Sincere thanks to MOTHERS member and voracious reader Kelly who found this great list of books about the many facets of the maternal experience.  If you read any of them, send a short review to valeriey@motherscenter.org, and we'll make sure to include it on our GoodReads.com MOTHERS Book Bag page, where you can jump in and join the discussion.  Thanks!
