Capitol"The fate of our nation hangs on the fate of women in the workforce."  So said Hilda Solis, Secretary of the US Department of Labor last week.  While women lost jobs in the recession later than men, they are way behind in regaining jobs during the alleged recovery.  Future economic growth depends on the creation of good jobs, with adequate wages and benefits, like retirement savings and health insurance, and the expansion of women into all kinds of jobs and industries. Do we want paved roads, disaster relief, clean air, safe water, medical research, public schools and air traffic control?  Taxes make them all possible.  The National Women's Law Center is telling women's advocates that raising taxes does not mean economic death.  Cutting public services takes away from women and children, who make up the majority of beneficiaries of Social Security, early education, childcare subsidies, Medicaid, food stamps, and cash assistance.  Budget cutting has taken millions of teachers (still mostly female) out of classrooms, cut job training programs, and reduced the number of visiting home health aides, who are mostly women caring for mostly women.  Increasing taxes on the wealthy and corporations, bluntly speaking, will impact men more, as they are the vast majority of high earners and owners of corporate wealth.

Maternity Leave BalloonsIn these days of high unemployment, losing your job moves quickly from a temporary setback to a long-term catastrophe.  Without paid family leave, the arrival of a new child, or the challenge of a seriously ill parent or spouse, could be a devastating one-way ticket out of the paid workforce.  Working Mother magazine's latest issue takes a stern look at our totally out of date workplace policies in "Eveyone but US".   After all, every other industrialized country guarantees months of paid leave.  Our FMLA only applies to about half our private sector workers, and goes largely unused because many workers can't afford to take time off without pay.  Isn't it time we joined the rest of the world? ValueHow to Value A Mother's Anguish

GavelA tragic case is making its way through the New York State legal system.  Until 2004, a mother in New York had no claim for the pain and suffering she experienced if medical malpractice resulted in the stillbirth of her child, unless she was physically harmed at the same time.  The purely emotional loss was simply outside recoverable damages, as it still is in many states.  Under the new law, she may bring a claim for this subjective loss, but the courts have no consensus on how it should be valued.  Comparing the mother's grief at death of her child to other kinds of pain and suffering, like being the victim of a dog attack or a passenger on a crashing plane, fails to capture the unique nature of the loss.  Now judges, juries, attorneys and their clients grapple with calculating fair compensation for a truly uncompensable event, with widely differing approaches.  The outcome of the first such cases will of course serve as precedent for stillbirth claims in the future, so much is at stake.  The New York Times covers this heartbreaking juxtaposition of motherhood and valuation
