Greetings!
Is it me, or has there been a lot of crazy stuff happening lately? Tornadoes a mile wide, earthquakes spanning thousands of miles and a hurricane bearing down on the east coast as far north as Maine, just to name a few. With the tenth anniversary of 9/11 just days away, it's a reminder that all the planning in the world can be blown away in moments. It's a reminder of what's really important - not the stuff that we accumulate, or the plans that we make, but the people. There's nothing wrong with those things put in their proper place. But our family, close friends, neighbors and the people we work with for 40 plus hours every week are the most important. Everything else can be replaced, rebuilt, reworked or reorganized - albeit not without some pain and effort. How do you cope when trouble strikes? What do you say to your children? In this issue we'll begin to address this topic and invite you to join the conversation. Best wishes,
Linda Lisi Juergens Executive Director 516 939-MOMS X101

Parenting Webinar How to be Your Child's Champion: Building Collaborative Relationships With the People in Your Child's World
Date/Time: Thursday, September 22nd, 2011, 1 to 2 PM ET
Presented by Valerie DeClara, Long Island Advocacy Center Facilitated by Lisa Kaplan-Miller, NAMC
There are opportunities (and there is so often the need!) to advocate in many aspects of our lives. Yet parents often struggle to define their roles and be heard when speaking for their children whether they are speaking to a teacher, a coach, and even the pediatrician.
This webinar will answer these questions:
- What does it mean to be an effective advocate for your child?
- When is it important to step in and how do you make that decision?
- How can you become more skillful and effective at advocating?
We will provide you with a basic understanding and the skills you'll need to make these decisions and to be effective in this role.
The presenter, Valerie DeClara, is an Education Advocate and Trainer for the Long Island Advocacy Center.
To register, click here. If you have any difficulties registering, contact Lisa Kaplan-Miller or call 877-939- 6667 ext 106.

It seems the earthquake and Hurricane Irene were the precursors for yet another emotional trigger for our collective psyche, the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. As we commemorate this historic event, it triggers the memories of that time of fear, stress and anxiety on top of already frayed nerves in our work-life scenario.
So imagine what it's like for a child. The unknown can be scarier than the real deal. And that fear and anxiety is not left at home, children are very perceptive and intuitive. They might not fully understand what's going on, but they feel it on other levels. Just like adults don't leave their emotional baggage at the door of the workplace, children may carry the anxiety of our chaotic times into their school day or playground.
